"I think banning surveillance advertising would be a very good first step. We would be really cutting at the root of the pathologies that we are dealing with from the tech industry, which is this mass surveillance in the name of influence, influence to sell something, influence to convince someone to vote for something, influence to misinform someone. Ultimately, that’s the game."

@Mer__edith 130 boosts in 6 hours. It's a great quote, People know how toxic surveillance advertising is!

172 boosts in 12 hours!
I think @Mer__edith has tapped into a deep, unmet hunger in the public for a ban on surveillance advertising!

36 hours and we're up to 268 boosts. I thought at first it might be just @Mer__edith 's well-deserved reputation. But I checked some of her own recent posts, and they got a decent number of boosts, but nothing like this.

I think a lot of people (on Mastodon at least) really have been longing for surveillance advertising to go away, but haven't dared to contemplate it until they saw this quote!

@grvsmth

It's all just a useless advertising arms race because people don't have money to buy more goods and services.

The only winners are those selling the surveillance data.

is there an object to this game? Does nobody question the efficacy of an ignorant and misinformed population?
>
I'm tired of the threats and promises, but I'm really tired of that nobody even asks why, like it's normal to destroy the world or something, WTF are they doing and FGS why?

@grvsmth @Mer__edith influence to buy more, work more, want what you didn't want, buy even more, work even more, and live in the rat race,...

... so they can chip out even more profits from low and middle class work, and live they comfortable good for nothing life out of passive income ...

I just dislike ads. If I want something, I'll do the research, buy it and enjoy...

There's no good, and no #sustainability, in "motivating" people to want more and more,...

@kravemir @Mer__edith Yes, that's exactly how I feel about advertising and statistics. Count how many clicks you get, how many logins, but don't sell it. I don't want personalized ads!

@grvsmth @Mer__edith: Yep. Especially that "We and our 237 surveillance partners …" 🙄

@xtaran @Mer__edith I'm trying to figure out what you were expecting.

@grvsmth @Mer__edith: A more privacy sensitive publisher when publishing on such topics.

@xtaran At this point I don't feel a need to question @Mer__edith 's outreach strategy.

“I don’t think we can have a conversation about disinformation without having a conversation about the role of massive homogenous platforms that have cannibalized our media ecosystem and our information ecosystem in service of profit and growth for a handful of companies.”
