#today #butterflies like this one are hibernating in a nettle patch on the edge of our garden, waiting for a warm sunny day to emerge. Thought it might have happened this week, but no sign yet
This genus - aglais urticae - is named after Aglaia (splendid, shining one) in Gk myth, & latin ‘urtica’, stinging nettle, on which its larvae feed.
In UK English we call these Small Tortoiseshells. Wondering how other languages name them. #gaygardener #linguist #linguistics #languages #savebutterflies
