I get so excited😍 when I see the 1st butterfly of the year appear here. Some years it’s a Peacock or Small Tortoiseshell enticed from hibernation by warm sunshine in Feb./March.
In 2023 it was on 1st April, a female Orange Tip, feeding on garlic mustard - the first of the Whites to populate this area. It’s of the ‘anthocharis’ tribe, appears to blend with the flower it’s on. Looking forward to many more.

Butterfly feeding on the tiny four-petaled flowers of garlic mustard. The butterfly has wings partly open, the top side of upper left wing is white with mottled black and white tip and one black spot. You can see, on the right, the under side of bottom wing, mottled or marbled green and white, and above that wing is part of the top wing, with its pale green tip.
