Update. "Scientists sue #NIH, saying politics cut their research funding"
apnews.com/article/nih-funding

"A group of scientists and health groups sued the NIH on Wednesday, arguing that an “ideological purge” of research funding is illegal and threatens medical cures…The suit was filed by the American Public Health Association [#APHA], unions representing scientists and some researchers who were stripped of grants."

A similar suit has been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (#ACLU), the Center for Science in the Public Interest (#CSPI), and the Protect Democracy Project (#PDP).

The #Trump admin had asked #SCOTUS to intervene & lift a block on the #deportations imposed by a lower court. But a brief filed on behalf of the #immigrants by the #ACLU & #DemocracyForward said that block is now “the only thing” preventing the Trump admin from sending immigrants “to a prison in #ElSalvador, perhaps never to be seen again, without any kind of procedural protection, much less judicial review.”

I recently became an #ACLU supporter for obvious reasons, and I'm already getting way more out of it than I expected

Just wanted to support the good work they're doing, but they offer a lot more benefits for supporters than I realized

For example, they're offering free legal training sessions on immigration law over the next few weeks 💪

Awesome stuff, wholeheartedly recommend. It feels much better to actually get involved and meet other people who are out there fighting back!

#ACLU: "It can't just be you're put on a plane in 2hrs"

ACLU says that unless there's a review process, "anyone could be taken off the street." He adds that the plaintiffs see another question: whether the proclamation itself is reviewable by the courts; he says it is.

ACLU: "This is a very dangerous road we're going down where the #AlienEnemiesAct can be invoked against a gang" [not a foreign nation or government]

Plaintiffs turn

#ACLU says they're not seeking to stop the govt from deporting people in normal course, under the #Immigration & Nationality Act, & argue that challenging the proclamation wouldn't work via individualized #HabeasCorpus cases.

#Boasberg asks what the plaintiffs think they have to do to show that they're not members of TdA.

ACLU says that during the WWI invocation, there weren't removals. And even during the WWII removals, the govt "set up a hearing board" to review cases.

"Chaos on the plane”, with media prestaged outside.

Overnight court filing from plaintiffs challenging last weekend’s deportations under Alien Enemies Act."
-S MacFarland

This is the ACLU overnight filing arguing against Trump’s deportation from the weekend. Awful details of inhumane treatment on the plane.

#Boasberg then asks how many people are subject to the proclamation & how many people are currently in #ICE custody.

#DOJ says they don't have it. #ACLU also says they don't have it, & points out that the proclamation is vague enough that it's hard for anyone to figure out who is subject.

#Boasberg now asks Lee Gelernt of the #ACLU is there are any other questions that should be asked, & asks him if he objects to the timing of a hearing tomorrow at noon to explain why they won't tell him the information.

Lee says "we're getting very close" to a #ConstitutionalCrisis.

the audio is unclear Lee's comments aren’t all relayed. He says it appears there is an admission that there may have been a flight which left after the order? the third flight?
