Angela Li<p>5) All that said, I am so glad I went to my first disciplinary <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociology</span></a> conference! I am buzzing with learning and excitement about ideas, my love for the urban, and new connections with like-minded folks. Thank you <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> for a great experience!</p><p>I’ll end with a photo of the Percy Street public art project - big thanks to Jason who showed us around your neighborhood on the last day of the conference. I hope to be back in Philly soon!</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/AcademicChatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicChatter</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/sociodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociodon</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@sociology" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>sociology</span></a></span></p>
Angela Li<p>4b) Another point about scheduling was that I often found that sessions that pulled from the same audience were scheduled at the same time on the same day. I missed out on the work of amazing people in my area because of this! I wish I could have seen a few more sessions.</p><p>📝 One tip for choosing sessions was that I sometimes followed my <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> mentor to the next session (after our chat). Every single time, that session was amazing - bc my mentor knew the field and had a “taste” for great work.</p>
Angela Li<p>3b) Also, access via transit from my university made it possible for folks to come on a daily basis, and brought in folks who may not have attended otherwise.</p><p>💐 Thank you to all the grad friends and kind souls (on here too!) who gave food recs, showed me a good time in the city and your own neighborhoods, and fueled my love of the urban.</p><p>📝 I was especially excited that <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> was next to Chinatown!! where I ate *every single day* and exhausted my supply of cash by the end of the conf 🍜🥟</p>
Angela Li<p>3) As an urban sociologist, I could not think of a better place to have <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> than Philly!! Honoring the legacy of DuBois, but placing us in neighborhoods that were affordable, walkable and transit accessible.</p><p>💡Affordability of the city was v important for me as a grad student - even after splitting hotels/costs and having a grant from my program to come. We pay upfront then get reimbursed later, which makes expensive cities hard, esp for those who need to think before making large payouts.</p>
Angela Li<p>2c) I would also like to give a huuuge thank you to the folks who tirelessly organized various <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> mentor sessions, including <span class="h-card"><a href="https://sciences.social/@elenavanstee" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>elenavanstee</span></a></span>, S. Michael Gaddis, Megan Evans, Margaret Gough Courtney, <span class="h-card"><a href="https://sciences.social/@Josefinaflores" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Josefinaflores</span></a></span>, and many, many others! The program is truly appreciated by younger scholars.</p><p>💐 We are lucky to have folks like you all (along with all the mentors who signed up) who care about building these important relationships in <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociology</span></a>.</p>
Angela Li<p>Inspired by <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@writingmonicker" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>writingmonicker</span></a></span>, I wanted to reflect on my first <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a>! </p><p>💐 The conference was overwhelmingly positive for me, so I wanted to express gratitude to all the organizers, mentors, friends, and kind souls that made it so. </p><p>💡But, as someone focused on social change, I pondered a few things that would make <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA</span></a> a more equitable experience for all.</p><p>📝 Finally, I wanted to process in public ideas for <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociology</span></a> students (aka: me in the future) to make the most out of it!</p>
Erik Love<p>Thanks to Rebecca Karam for organizing this excellent panel, "Muslim Americans and Racialization Across Generations" with Saher Selod, Inaash Islam, and Hajar Yazdiha. I was truly honored to join the panel as a discussant. <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a></p>
Monica Heilman 지혜<p>I will say I've never felt as much temptation to go back to Twitter as I did during <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a>. 🫤</p>
Monica Heilman 지혜<p>4) Finding people in your area is a game changer. It might be because I've been in the hating-my-dissertation stage of the phd (ha), but I forgot how energizing conversations about research can be. </p><p>We have the luxury of choosing topics that we're passionate about and engaging with puzzles that are intellectually stimulating for us. My family and friends outside of academia would probably call this "being a big nerd" but I enjoyed nerding out with you <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a>. Until next time 👋</p>
Monica Heilman 지혜<p>3) Job market pressure really sabotaged my networking attempts at first. </p><p>It took me until around Saturday night to start letting that pressure go. And it's a lot easier to talk to someone when you're genuinely excited about their work, rather than feeling like you "have to" build connections. </p><p>It took me a while but I got there. And now I can follow up with folks over email. Not so scary after all. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA23" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA23</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sociology</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/JobMarket" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JobMarket</span></a></p>
Monica Heilman 지혜<p>A few thoughts I guess. Why not. </p><p>1) You all weren't kidding when you said <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA</span></a> was huge. The number of sessions is ridiculous and there are so many I wish I could have attended. But a good problem to have.</p><p>2) I really felt the impact of <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/covid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covid</span></a>. 2020 would have been my first ASA and I couldn't help but imagine how different my networks would be today if I'd started regularly attending ASA then, particularly in my specific area.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA23" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA23</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sociology</span></a></p>
Monica Heilman 지혜<p>Well, that's my first in-person ASA down. Of COURSE I didn't remember to post anything during the actual conference.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sociology</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/AcademicChatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicChatter</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/AcademicMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicMastodon</span></a></p>
Michael Wood<p>Feeling grateful for the chance to attend <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a>. Always love meeting up with old friends, learning about inspiring research, and eating great food!</p>
Joel Stillerman<p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a></p>
Philip N Cohen<p>A glorious to be not at <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a></p>
Mark Igra<p>Best evidence that teaching people to think sociologically is useless in changing behavior is that so many sociologists who abhor the nazification of Twitter and understand its implications continue to support the site. (Of course weakness of values in shaping action IS sociological so 🤷‍♀️) Oh well, we’ll be here for em, slowly boring 🤔 away. <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociology</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/@nickmartin/110919378294378823" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">masto.ai/@nickmartin/110919378</span><span class="invisible">294378823</span></a></p>
Jaclyn Wong<p>See me present "What to do with 'Other, Describe'" today at <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a>. Philip N Cohen<p>Any word from @ASANews <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> on this? Elizabeth Wrigley-Field<p>A major, annoying snafu with my <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> hotel reservation, which I've been trying to fix for more than a week, has been fixed by creating a new reservation outside of the ASA hotel block and paying $50</p><p>The excellent hotel reservation worker I worked with was very polite and tactful in explaining that the ASA housing service is rather difficult to work with and not fully up on the logistics at all times</p><p>I'm not *terribly* surprised</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ASASociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASASociology</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/asa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>asa</span></a></p>
Jonathan Horowitz<p>Philadelphia is probably the best fit for ASA of any of the places it has been held. Easy to get to, hotels aren't too expensive, right next to Chinatown, good convention center. Only other places that compared were Chicago and Denver (which sadly won't happen again anytime soon).</p><p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA2023</span></a> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ASA23" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASA23</span></a></p>
