Devin Prater :blind:
APS3E is a PS3 emulator for Android. Right now, it doesn't support vibration feedback on the phone. Like, having in-game vibration events sent to the phone's vibrator. So every time there's an update, I check for it.

Does this one vibrate?

*loads Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 and powers up* Are you feelin' it, Mr. Crabs? Are you feelin' it, Mr. Crabs? ... Nope. I feel nothing. I am void. I am oblivion!

Will this update do it for me? *Loads DBZ Raging Blast 2* Are you feelin' it now, Mr. Crabs? Huh? Feelin' the vibes? Nope. Still nothing.

Lol. I'll give it a few more months. It is the only PS3 emulator for Android that has an in-game screen TalkBack can focus on and describe, so that's why I use it over RPCSx. Also RPCSX doesn't even expose the game list to TalkBack so I have to suspend it and poke around like a blind man and hope I touched the right game. :)

#gaming #emulation #PS3 #android #blind

Hannes
So, #Android folks... I found a phone in my drawer that lets me open the bootloader and, surprisingly, is still supported by most custom android versions.

I'm looking into testing those to remove as many Google services as possible. But I'd love to get something like the Google play sandboxed as grapheneOS offers (iirc), so I can eventually even get my GF on a custom android OS. But for that, play store is a must - also because banking apps and such.

Anything good you can recommend to try?

Briefly tried lineageOS now and it looks nice, but not sure I can set up the play store like that there. Maybe I just didn't see it.

Miguel Afonso Caetano
"[Google] has been gradually eroding Android’s open-source capacity in the last decade.

For example, it recently released the source code for Android 16 without the device trees and drivers for its Pixel phones. Device trees tell the operating system what hardware is present in the device: camera, display, speakers, Bluetooth, and so on. Drivers provide instructions for how to use these components. Without them, your phone is just an expensive paperweight.

In March, Google said that it would develop Android behind closed doors. Previously everyone could see the code as it was being written. Developers working on alternative versions could grab this prerelease code, make their changes, and test them on actual devices. They could release their versions just days after Google. Now they must wait for months until Google dumps the code alongside the stable release. This greatly delays the development cycle for competitors.

In 2023, Google deprecated the open-source Dialer and Messaging features and made future versions proprietary. This means that others must build their own software to make phone calls or send text messages from scratch. Over the years, Google has moved many crucial features, such as the camera, keyboard, and push notifications, from the open-source project to its closed-source black box. Competitors must now spend their scarce resources on reinventing the wheel rather than implementing new features.

Being open source helped Android compete against the iPhone and swiftly dominate the global smartphone market. Manufacturers could quickly adapt it to their devices and sell at lower prices than they could if they had to make their own operating systems from scratch. But now that it has captured the market, Google is rolling up the ladder behind it to keep competition at bay."

https://jacobin.com/2025/07/google-android-smartphones-open-source

#OpenSource #Android #Google #Smartphones #Oligopolies #Monopolies #IP #BigTech

Devin Prater :blind:
From the BrailleNote mailing list, about BrailleNote updates:

I'm not a HumanWare employee but was also there and can get this started and they can come in and verify.

They started with the first Braillenote Touch that had android. They went thru the entire Google certification process to allow it to have all the google services like google play store. This certification allowed them to update its Android OS to a certain point. To go any farther they had to have a device certified for the new version. They tried to certify the first braillenote touch for the new android OS but google will not allow recertification of a already certified device. This is where Braillenote touch plus comes to play. They created a new model and got it certified for the new version of android OS. Braillenote touch plus has now again gotten to the limit of its android OS updates. Human ware said the process of certifying a device of extensive and the cost was extremely high for the low number of devices they sell. They said there will be new devices to continue the segment with, but they can't talk about those right now. They said they're not just stopping the braillenote touch plus and that's it! They're working on finding a valid solution for the high cost of google certification for a new device. Rather that's Linux, windows, uncertified android, etc.

The Monarch has an uncredited android which is not a bad or wrong thing to do, this just means it doesn't have the google services like play store.

I hope this helps everyone understand where they are with this and that it's a google stupidity thing not a HumanWare thing.

#Braille #accessibility #blind #BrailleNote #technology #Android #google
