Alistair K
Trembling a bit this week. Dropped phone. What should I replace it with if I want to run a custom OS? It was a Samsung M10 and I'm fed up with Samsung's OSs and design goals. They make everything from phones to dishwashers difficult for me. I'm happy that it broke!

I was happy with LineageOS on a Samsung S3 for many years.

What are options should I look at? Easy visual interface is very important for me – I need to be able to tell icons apart easily, and the most important buttons must be mechanical, not hidden virtual things that must be revealed by a secret swipe. Camera needs to be silent. Needs to run smoothly (the M10 delays for so long that I repeat actions thinking that it didn't register them, only to find that it has queued them all).

GrapheneOS, perhaps? Switch to iOS (I use a Mac)?

#Android #phone #grapheneOS #LineageOS

Devin Prater :blind:
For those moving from iOS to Android, you can go to iCloud.com, and forward iCloud emails to your Gmail or whatever if you can't be bothered to sign into your iCloud email with Aquamail or Fairmail and such. Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox
We've had a few iOS updates in the last few Android Progress Reports, but with more substantial iOS news, it's time for a name change! So here's the shiny, new(ish) Mobile Progress Report! ✨

Last month, we published our initial iOS repository, made plans for Testflight and laid out our intended initial features. We also discuss initial release engineering and localization decisions. There are other ways to pay for it outside of the G ecosystem, right?

Edited to add: I don't use NC but most of the FOSS Android apps I use lose functionality/gain bloat in their Play Store versions so I'm curious why Google's ever-arbitrary decision w/ this one is so shocking.

#Android #NextCloud #Google #foss

I was sure it used to come out both, the phone ringing comes out both...

Realized that this is a new phone (with IR and thermal cameras) and that the problem started when I changed phones.

Some Internet searching determined that some utter moron at Google has decided that only phone ringing can play out both the headset and the phone speaker, text messages will come out the headset if it's connected, out the speaker only if no headset is connected. WTAF, people? I take my headset off and put it in my pocket - no texts for me. Update your Android, start missing texts.

A little more searching found an easy solution - install Tasker or If This Then That, and program a simple task to play a phone ringtone on any incoming text.

I've tested it for a couple weeks now, it's a flawless workaround for a problem caused by idiotic software designers who think they know more than their users. You can even program different ringtones for texts from different people if you like.

#android #tasker #ittt #workarounds
