#News 📢 from #AI #research 📂: “How #ChatGPT 💻 can benefit from human #brains 🧠 - or how we teach #machines 🤖 to #think 🤓

My colleague #Axel #Stöcker and I have already been able to conduct some very exciting interviews on this very topic in our #Zoomposium series “#Artificial #intelligence and its consequences” and “#Cognitive #neuroscience and #epistemology”.

One “highlight”, for example, was the very exciting interview “Zoomposium with Dr. #Patrick #Krauss: ‘Bauanleitung Künstliches Bewusstsein’“, in which we asked him about the possibilities of ‘how the #theories of #consciousness - especially those of #Antonio #Damasio - could be used to develop artificial systems based on ’#felt#information. This foundation could be used to #machine #learning and #deep #learning so that #AI #systems learn to respond to #emotions and #changes in their #environment in a similar way to #biological #organisms.

In this context #Patrick #Krauss was also currently at the „#Embodied and #Situated #Language #Processing (#ESLP2024) conference from 03 to 05 October 2024, which was organized by members of the „#Brain #Language #Lab“ of the #FreienUniversitätBerlin. There he had the opportunity to present the latest research results together with his team from #FAU.

One of #Patrick #Krauss talks was about a study „Analyzing Narrative Processing in Large Language Models”, which he had conducted in collaboration with his colleague #Achim #Schilling. The results of this study are partly based on an article “Leaky-Integrate-and-Fire Neuron-Like Long-Short-Term-Memory Units as Model System in Computational Biology”, for which he and his team were awarded the #BestPaperAward at the „International Jount Conference on Neural Networks #IJCNN2023”, the world's largest interdisciplinary conference on #artificial and #biological #neural #networks.

These current results from AI research of #Patrick #Krauss are therefore a real „jointventure” between #AI and #neuroscience, as the data and methods can contribute directly to the improvement of #large #language #models (#LLM), such as #ChatGPT, and in return the #cognitive #neurosciences can also learn something about the use and formation of #language in the #brain from this #implementation and #simulation of #cognitive #processes on #machines.

If you would like to learn more about #Patrick #Krauss ' very interesting #research #results, you can find out more here:

Zoomposium with. #Kristian #Kersting: “No Terminator in sight. The future and opportunities of #artificial #intelligence"

I was therefore pleased that Kristian had accepted our invitation to give an interview on the topic of “The future and opportunities of artificial intelligence”. In our joint interview, he explains the current “state of the art” of AI research and also addresses the social impact of this new technology.

"Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium...We’re tempted to project those experiences onto a large language model when it emits coherent sentences, but to do so is to fall prey to mimicry; " - Ted Chiang (The New Yorker)

Silicon Valley is maximizing profit at everyone’s expense.

It doesn’t have to be this way

A public battle has broken out among the titans of Silicon Valley.

🔸One side, led by #Elon #Musk, PayPal co-founder #Peter #Thiel and venture capitalists #Marc #Andreessen and #Ben #Horowitz,
is backing Donald #Trump for president.

🔸The other, led by LinkedIn co-founder #Reid #Hoffman, is behind Kamala #Harris.

⚠️We should not make the mistake of thinking this is a battle over ideology or policy.

It’s a battle to ♦️maximize Silicon Valley’s profits regardless of the consequences for society.♦️

On this objective, both sides agree.

Andreessen Horowitz is one of the largest investors in #cryptocurrency and #artificial #intelligence,
and Trump has signaled that he would keep the government out of its business.

Meanwhile, soon after donating $7 million to a Harris super PAC,
Hoffman called for her to oust Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman #Lina #Khan,
who has brought antitrust cases against Big Tech and introduced rules to protect workers.

Silicon Valley, a longtime engine of human achievement,
has become a significant source of human harm.

Aware of the gathering backlash, its leaders have dived into the political fray 💥to protect their wealth.💥

Two Silicon Valley obsessions threaten the most damage:
creating human #addiction to increase profits
and #eliminating #humans altogether to decrease costs.

Social media platforms,
which started out by bringing old friends together and giving voice to the otherwise powerless,
have become “social slot machines”
compelling excessive use.

Gaming companies have a similar objective.

Teenagers today spend more than eight hours a day on screens,
fueling digital advertising revenues that reached $225 billion last year.

Meanwhile, the artificial intelligence revolution promises to cut labor costs.

A recent study by MIT economist #Daron #Acemoglu found that 50% to 70% of the growth in inequality between more and less educated workers can be attributed to automation.

Poverty rates in Silicon Valley’s home state are rising
even as AI makes Big Tech richer.

The broader prospects are equally concerning.

AI is enabling killer robots, autonomous weapons and massively destructive misinformation.

My wife is French, and I have French citizenship. We watch from time to time, series on PBS Passport from French TV. On Amazon Prime TV, we saw a series, popular in France 'Murders in ... ( various parts of the country). It had been obtained by the service MHZ and dubbed in English. The dubbing is incredibly bad with mispronunciations of place names and inappropriate phrasing. I seems to be an AI application. No names of dubbing artists are shown in the credits. I can't believe that AI is this advanced. Has anyone else experience this?

Egregious examples of #artificial #intelligence that have recently made their way into #scientific #journals, shine a light on the wave of 💥AI-generated text and images washing over the academic publishing industry.💥

Several experts who track down problems in studies told AFP that the rise of AI has turbocharged the existing problems in the multi-billion-dollar sector.

All the experts emphasized that AI programs such as ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for writing or translating papers—if thoroughly checked and disclosed.

But that was not the case for recent cases that somehow snuck past peer review, such as:
🔹An infographic of a rat with a preposterously large penis.
🔹Another showing human legs with way too many bones.
🔹An introduction that starts: "Certainly, here is a possible introduction for your topic".

It is not always so easy to spot the use of AI.
-- But one clue is that ChatGPT tends to favor certain words.

Andrew Gray, a librarian at University College London, trawled through millions of papers searching for the overuse of words such as #meticulous, #intricate or #commendable.

He determined that at least
💥60,000 papers involved the use of AI in 2023
—over one percent of the annual total.

"For 2024 we are going to see very significantly increased numbers," Gray told AFP.

Meanwhile, more than
⭐️13,000 papers were #retracted last year, by far the most in history, according to the US-based group Retraction Watch.

AI has allowed the bad actors in scientific publishing and academia to "industrialize the overflow" of "#junk" papers, Retraction Watch co-founder Ivan Oransky told AFP.

Such bad actors include what are known as #paper #mills.

These "scammers"
♦️sell authorship to researchers, pumping out vast amounts of very poor quality, plagiarized or fake papers, said Elisabeth Bik, a Dutch researcher who detects scientific image manipulation.

Two percent of all studies are thought to be published by paper mills,
but the rate is "exploding" as AI opens the floodgates, Bik told AFP.

This problem was highlighted when academic publishing giant Wiley purchased troubled publisher Hindawi in 2021.

Since then, the US firm has retracted more than 11,300 papers related to special issues of Hindawi, a Wiley spokesperson told AFP.

Wiley has now introduced a "paper mill detection service" to detect AI misuse—which itself is powered by AI.

Stochastic parrots keep getting bigger and their feed bills are going up exponentially. We're seeing signs of smart money heading for the exits, but even if this whole thing crashes, millions of people will have missed the fundamental point: It will always be #artificial, but try as it may, it can't be #intelligence

Aggregation does not magically produce abstraction.
