Regular reminder for anyone who might have an Apple Silicon based Mac that Asahi Linux is a thing and a good thing. It's not just Intel Macs that can play nice with Linux.

I love my little M1 Macbook Air. It's great hardware and never gets overheated. But sometimes I need to play with Linux instead of MacOS.

Asahi installation was able to hive off a small partition during setup to dual-boot. It's very smooth and makes for a great desktop. I've got Firefox and LibreOffice and even Proton VPN running nice. It's ready for prime time.

Am sending this toot from Asahi Linux right now :)

The cool thing I always find with reading up on #AsahiLinux's progress reports is the often, "elegant" solutions required/implemented by #Apple for their hardware (despite the jankiness of #macOS, honestly), and the Asahi Linux team reverse engineering and reimplementing it, bringing some of that "elegance" and brilliantly engineered/designed solutions over to #Linux (perhaps in a better way, working with retrospect and all).

Honestly this project is a win-win for a lot of parties - again, the (incredibly talented) Asahi team is able to replicate/reiterate on some of these brilliant designs Apple's done and bring them to Linux, both Apple and Linux itself have been receiving important reports of some well hidden bugs found by the Asahi team throughout their development, and #Rust is becoming increasingly more present in the Linux kernel which as I've grown to understand is a very important "fight".

Heck, this project has even brought to light some of the nasty parts of the Linux (development) community that a lot of users wouldn't have known about otherwise, which critically needs fixing.

In good news, #OpenBSD kernel for #AppleSilicon is in sync with every other architecture, so it is a much more sustainable state.

I fell down an interesting rabbit hole with Telegram. Telegram-Desktop uses Jemalloc which seems to run into some problems with the 16k page sizes on Asahi Linux. If you build from the RPM package it builds fine because the version of Jemalloc for Asahi is built using 16k page sizes. That said, if you use the Flatpak version, it's built for 4k page sizes and crashes out.

Since Jemalloc can only have the page sizes set at build time and not runtime, how exactly would you fix the Flatpak version without breaking out of the Flatpak sandbox and linking the system install of Jemalloc? :wolf_peek:​ And how does Flatpak usually handle other similar edge cases where different build options are needed even on the same architecture?

#FedoraAsahiRemix 41 is making use of KDE Plasma 6.2 as its default desktop environment but GNOME 47 packages are available for those interested.
#Apple M1 and M2 powered devices remain the best prospects for now for those interested in #AsahiLinux with the M3/M4 bring-up still ongoing.
