And I immediately remove from consideration any service that touts "AI." I haven't looked into it very thoroughly, but from what I've seen, self-hosting seems less complicated than, say, self-hosting Nextcloud. Since I'm the only one who would initiate a meeting, and I usually only do so once or twice a week, for small groups (usually fewer than 12), the server wouldn't have to be running uninterrupted, 24/7. Does anyone have any experience self-hosting BigBlueButton?

CPUs stay below 3% the whole time. We have seen Meetings with 400+ participants running fine on our hardware. Les universités, comme les institutions étatiques, ont cherché « la » solution. Zoom et Teams ont été adoptés de façon presque universelle. Les rares institutions qui ont essayé autre chose — en utilisant, par exemple, Jitsi ou BigBlueButton — ont vite abandonné en affirmant que ces logiciels ne fonctionnaient pas assez bien. Zoom et Teams fonctionnaient parfaitement. Or ces outils posent des problèmes qui ont été complètement ignorés. On peut en identifier deux : en premier lieu, le fait qu’ils implémentent une vision du monde particulière et qu’ils ne répondent donc pas à tous les besoins, mais à un besoin spécifique ; en second lieu, qu’ils sont propriétaires et privés et qu’ils ne peuvent donc pas véritablement servir à mettre en place des espaces numériques publics. La première raison devrait désormais être claire : Zoom et Teams ont été conçus en tant qu’outils d’entreprise. Dans le cas de Teams, son intégration à la suite Microsoft Office en atteste : Teams sert à améliorer la productivité des entreprises, en s’intégrant à l’ensemble des activités de chaque salarié·e, en permettant de partager les documents produits avec les autres logiciels de la suite, en rendant les employé·es continuellement disponibles et joignables. Microsoft devient l’espace de travail lui-même : plus besoin d’un bureau, car tout se trouve physiquement sur les serveurs de Microsoft, qui peut ensuite envoyer des rapports de productivité à chaque employé·e ainsi qu’aux dirigeantes. Un rapport à propos de Teams réalisé par le cabinet de conseil Forrester à la demande de Microsoft en 2019 montre clairement ce type de vision du monde : il s’agit de maximiser la productivité, de réduire les temps morts (y compris le temps nécessaire pour passer d’une salle à une autre). Les logiciels proposés par la Silicon Valley ont constitué des solutions pour maintenir la juste distance permettant de maximiser la production les valeurs des GAFAM et celles des États étaient finalement parfaitement alignées. Zoom se situe dans la même lignée ; certes moins intégré dans une suite d’activités de bureau, il propose cependant une forme de rencontre typique de la réunion d’affaires. Il vise à maximiser la productivité en proposant des systèmes pour que les employeurs et les employeuses puissent contrôler leurs employé·es (le « traçage d’attention », par exemple, qui permet de vérifier si une personne détourne les yeux de l’écran) : il permet donc de contrôler l’espace de la réunion en la rendant plus productive. Or, comment de telles visions du monde et des relations interpersonnelles peuvent-elles être compatibles, par exemple, avec la situation d’une soutenance de thèse ? Ou d’un cours ? La question ne semble pas s’être posée. La seconde raison est liée à la première et elle est peut-être encore plus préoccupante. Comme je le soulignais dans l’exemple de la soutenance, l’espace où se produit un événement est très important pour le sens et la valeur mêmes de cet événement. Où ont lieu les événements qui sont hébergés par Teams ou par Zoom ? Sur leurs serveurs. Qui en est donc le garant ? Ces entreprises.
