We spotted our first northern flickers (𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) on our hike yesterday! A pair of them. I heard them before I saw them-- their call is quite distinctive. They were too quick for me to get any pictures, but at least my teen got this shot of the backside of one:

I love that in Australia it’s completely normal to see birds that look like they belong in the rainforest on your morning walk through a suburban part of a non-tropical city.
On the excellent BirdLife Australia Instagram one of their scientists recently talked about how Australian birds might be so bright because many tens of thousands of years ago a lot of Australia was covered in rainforest.

I’m off to a slow start today and haven’t made much progress. I had hoped to have this done by 9:00 AM, but here we are.
For those who follow my posts—Ben started Laverdia today. I also decided to take him off Tramadol, as I suspected it was suppressing his appetite and leaving him in a dazed state. Already, he seems more like his old self. We'll see how things go from here.
The ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) seem to favor this old rustic feeder above all the others—though, perhaps it’s simply because the newer one is still empty.
