“I Was a Software Developer...” Chapter 13 #WIP 1

I’ve still been working on this scene, which is inside a crafting shop and will be new for this chapter. This WIP features a semi-final design of a desk I modeled scratch and it has a section behind glass panels to display more items.

It uses a stylized glass material that is opaque to the viewers since what I wanted to do by showing off crystals and containers of beads behind a translucent glass material wasn’t very practical when I tried. I even modeled beads and containers and made materials for them when I decided to just use an opaque glass material in the display because this scene already took a lot of time 🥲

I also modeled the cash register to make one that fit an aesthetic style. With these illustrations for story chapters, I need to balance detail with practicality and pacing. There are some rendering errors but at least this render worked on the first try when some of these might be pushing my computer to its limits!

Behind the register are shelves with samples of cloth and crystals on display as a sampling of the materials that customers can order. I used the Decimate modifier to reduce the polygon count as much as I could for each piece of cloth while I tried not to make them look too rough, and the Array modifier was useful for stacks.

💡 Blender tip…

Change Blender's Keymap Preferences to turn your right mouse-button into an easy click-and-drag brush size control.

The screenshot shows which Sculpt Mode Keymap entries to change, but there are similar controls for other Blender modes, like Texture Paint.

As you can see, I've also reassigned the F hotkey to the brush Strength value control, with Confirm On Release option, and suppressed the right-click brush controls pop-up panel.

When I wrote Space Pop, it was an exercise in fighting writers block. Generative AI had just come out and I wanted to write something about robots and the fate of humanity under an AI overlord. It was meant to be absurd nonsense, but ended up becoming an entire universe with an epic story… in my head that is, not the song. After recording the track I thought that the song didn’t really make a lot of sense without the universe I’d built around it, and that still only existed in my imagination, so I resolved to create a music video, if only to breathe some life into the Rover and show what a Dizzy 8-0 Ray is! I spent several months learning #Blender3D and many of the disciplines required to use the software like solid modelling, sculpting, skeletal animation, hair simulations, liquid simulations, dust simulations, geometry nodes, materials, textures, lighting… I could go on. It was brutal. Especially hair simulations which had me pulling my hair out. I followed a lot of YouTube tutorials and tried to adapt each lesson into something for the clip. Anyone who’s done some YouTube Blender tutorials might recognise some in there. No doughnuts though. I even did the video editing in #Blender! It’s super powerful software.

The first take was sung by me, and the doo doo doo’s were played on an electric guitar. I invited my friend Kaaren to sing on this track and gave her the first take to listen to for a week. When she arrived she was humming the guitar line with her doo doo doo’s and I just thought it was perfect and replaced my guitar line with her vocals. She smashed out the whole song in a single recording session. There’s no pitch correction or anything, it’s all just Kaaren having fun with the music.

This is Kaaren’s only recording. Grab yourself a copy on #Bandcamp for #BandcampFriday

This toot will also be my submission for #AlternateFridayMusic, for the word is #Pop!
