Nynorskvenner!

Today, I work with #TaDiRAH. My team from the Uni of Oslo Library & the Oslo Metropolitan Uni, Dept. of Archivist, Library and Information Science, contributes the Norwegian #bokmål and #nynorsk translations for version 2 of the taxonomy. We collaborate with the Uni Oslo's Center for Computing in Science Education #CCSE mn.uio.no/ccse/english/index.h. We present & discuss the translation & dissemination work during a #DH2023 workshop on Monday, July 10th. Program here: conftool.pro/dh2023/sessions.p

How do you make a long consonant you may ask? Well it’s just like a regular consonant (e.g. ‘t’), but you pause for a ‘beat’ in the middle of the sound, a bit like a glottal stop.

So ‘hytte’ (cabin) is pronounced ‘hit-te’ (the ‘y’ sounds like the ‘y’ in ‘yes’, but is short because of the double ‘t’ which is ‘long’). In a sentence, the rhythm is short-long-short-long etc.

Get the rhythm wrong and Norwegians won’t recognise what word you were going for. #norsk #bokmål

Norwegian is a remarkable language in many ways, not least that you can make all of the right sounds in the right order and still not be understood because the rhythm is wrong. The rhythm of a word tells a Norwegian whether it has long or short vowels and consonants (yes, Norwegian has ‘long’ consonants!).

Does rhythm play such a prominent role in the understandability of any non-Nordic languages? #LifeInNorway #norsk #bokmål

”kva staar tu täär å filmar för?” ’what for do you stand there filming?’

kva: most words that are spelled hv- in (or ) are pronounced kv- as in kva/hvad? ’what’, kviitär/hvid ’white’ & kveit/hvede ’wheat’
kva vs. staar: the dialect preserves the Old Nordic diversity of syllable quantity in mainstress syllables, with CVCC, CVVC, CVVCC, CVC and also stressed CV. Thus long vowels are (by recent standardization) supposed to be written double researchgate.net/publication/2
