Q. how to solve the carers' overpayments crisis?

A. do the checks on earning quicker so overpayment 'debts' do not accrue to the levels they have in the past?

That's the DWP's (technocratic) answer.

A better answer might be to respect carers, recognise that unless they have a pension they have to work to supplement it & remove this threshold altogether.

Once people are providing care, lets just pay them & not penalise them for juggling their incomes!

The Guardian · DWP to overhaul carer’s allowance checks after overpayment scandalBy Patrick Butler

Where is the #care in Health Care? "Blue Cross had stranded many of the center’s patients with high bills, amounts that it had absorbed over the years. On several occasions, though, Blue Cross executives had signed special one-time deals with the center, known as single case agreements, to pay for their wives’ cancer treatment."

The interaction between the NHS & the care system is so difficult to navigate that its harming carers & those who need care; its exhausting carers (who often have to retell their medical histories again & again) to the point of burnout.

Although as yet only partly exposed to this (as the primary carer for my wife) I have already experienced the exhaustion of constantly having to go back to square one to explain to a new specialist what is going on....

Coucou Mastodon,

Join our workshops on sharing challenging social science data. On 8 May, delve into 'The Ethics of Sharing Fieldwork Data and the CARE Principles,' and explore how Dutch universities implement these ethics.

On 26 May, attend 'Sharing Field Notes' and learn best practices for research transparency and collaboration. These sessions are designed for early-career researchers.

In the last 10 years the number of people in the over-65 age group has risen by 20%, while the number of care home beds has risen by less than 3%.

The former figure is a testament to rising life expectancy & better health care, the latter figure is the context in which there is a crisis in the availability of place if care homes (driving up prices & locking many unpaid carers into care for relatives, while being kicked by the DWP).

We need a solution for everyone's sake!

Our new paper proposes adapting the #CARE Principles o manage sensitive information during wartime and humanitarian crises:

We explore how CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics) can protect internally displaced persons and civilians in occupied territories from potential misuse of their data.

It's crucial to remember that in conflict conditions, data isn't just numbers - it's people's safety and lives.
