"That one man could accumulate such a fortune, much less be willing to spend it on a company for #ideological or #personal reasons, was a testament to the world's widening wealth #inequality. This simply wasn't what the elite did with their money. To buy and operate a global corporation for one's own pleasure was unheard of. Musk was breaking the rules of what it meant to be rich."

#CharacterLimit - How #ElonMusk destroyed #Twitter - "Bring that Cattle" Chapter - PP. 139

Yay, thanks to @jan being lovely and not shying away from the headache of hosting a forked Mastodon, my instance how has an increased character limit.

This was one of my main bugbears and is going to improve my life. Not having to freaking edit something to squeeze in that one extra character? Yes, please.

If you want Jan to host your own Mastodon instance (maybe an instance for one, just you?), see toot.io/mastodon_hosting.html

Now that everybody's talking about #PhonyStark's phone calls with #Putin, time to remind all y'all that, as revealed in #CharacterLimit by Kate Conger & Ryan Mac, just one day before closing his acquisition of #Twitter, #Musk was $400 million short of the $44 billion he owed, and tried to shake down Twitter board into paying it out of their cache reserves. Mysteriously,¹ he found the money overnight.

¹ When exactly #8vc, a noname firm employing two sons of Putin's oligarchs, join the deal?

Finished Act I: the first third of the book that covers the #Twitter's path from its beginnings to getting the hostile acquisition offer from #Musk. Oof.

I was there in 2021-2022, but there was a lot going on that I only suspected, and even more that I had no idea about and that in retrospect explains a lot.

For example, #Dorsey being an absentee CEO was very obvious from before I even finished onboarding. But based on what I learned about him from #CharacterLimit, it was a good thing.

Hardly any of your posts are text without a/v enhancements. Do you believe corporate social media conditioned users to only read/observe a/v enhanced messages and avoid text, especially long text?

Mastodon in order to replicate the twitter feeling for users "limited" comments to 500 characters, when the smallest image requires 100 times more in resources. It has also made it hard for server managers to extend this limit.

OFF TOPIC #CharacterLimit

If you are directing this to me, yes, but that is another discussion.
I have over 40k posts, including many threads and convos, which still cannot be migrated.
Besides, #desecration is an issue. Someone defederation from the "mother instance" is bound to be very isolated very quickly.
For me, a no-go, at this point.
Besides, like Laffy and Cory, you learn to live with it, and you also have more opportunities to feature links 😉
