JanetteSpeyer<p>I’m in <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Berlin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Berlin</span></a>. I am very impressed with how this country pulled itself together after its tragic history, not to mention how welcoming and hospitable its people are to visitors like us. “East Berlin” is beautiful with modern architecture. I’m sharing some of my <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/photos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photos</span></a>. Note: I don’t know which ones are East or West. <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/artwalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>artwalk</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/uberarena" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>uberarena</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/topographyofterror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>topographyofterror</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/checkpointcharlie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>checkpointcharlie</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/flipboard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flipboard</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/flipboardusergroup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flipboardusergroup</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>germany</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>travel</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/traveltip" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>traveltip</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>

With hindsight, the 80s was a very strange and quite terrifying time to be growing up. The <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/IronCurtain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IronCurtain</span></a> splitting Europe in two, frequent footage of <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CheckpointCharlie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CheckpointCharlie</span></a> and nuclear missile launchers on tv news. On the outside of the local municipal swimming pool(!), a sign showing <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/fallout" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fallout</span></a> circles rippling out from <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Faslane" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Faslane</span></a>, to remind you just how dead you would be if/when it was targeted. ☢️</p><p>On the other hand, we got <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/99LuftBallons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>99LuftBallons</span></a>… 🥰</p>
