the roamerOur twins (12yo) had invited two friends over. Somehow the planning went wrong and my girls weren't back yet when the friends arrived. Awkward. What to do? I knew that one of the two friends plays chess. I pulled out my competition-sized chess set (we have it ready at all times), and we played. She made sensible moves. I played carelessly but I did not make deliberate mistakes. Once or twice I asked her to re-think her move and pointed out the dangers. She understood and corrected. Most of the time it was just the silent exchange of moves, a conversation without words. The other girl was watching. No awkwardness left, just good people playing an intelligent game.Then my twins arrived. The game was almost over.When she got me, I told her, "you have to say the words". Her friend whispered to her: "Check mate", and she said those words. I congratulated her.
