Ocean acidification, often called the “evil twin” of the climate crisis, is caused when carbon dioxide is rapidly absorbed by the ocean, where it reacts with water molecules leading to a fall in the pH level of the seawater. It damages coral reefs and other ocean habitats and, in extreme cases, can dissolve the shells of marine creatures.

Fluorescent light reveals invisible #smoke at high altitudes - as currently from Canadian #wildfires across Europe
#ForestFires could have a greater impact on clouds and #climate than previously assumed

EurekAlert!Fluorescent light reveals invisible smoke at high altitudes - as currently from Canadian wildfires across EuropeThe fluorescence lidar technology does not only enable a better determination of the origin of particles in the atmosphere. The method can also visualise particle layers that were previously practically invisible. This is the conclusion drawn by a team from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) from the evaluation of 250 hours of lidar measurements over Leipzig in 2022 and 2023. The researchers had repeatedly observed very thin layers of smoke at high altitudes, which originated from forest fires in Canada but could not be seen using conventional methods. This suggests that the upper troposphere over Europe may be more polluted than previously assumed, especially during the summer forest fire season, the research team writes in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. The observations suggest that thin layers of smoke can favour the formation of ice clouds. The fluorescence method offers great opportunities for a more detailed investigation of such interactions between aerosols and clouds. The measurements in Leipzig are once again showing wildfire smoke from Canada. This smoke is therefore not only visible on satellite images, but can now be analysed in more detail using fluorescence lidar technology.

When I have pinned blame on climate change on USian boomers as a generation, it is not simply ageism. It is lament of the fact that they have been in political power for a long time, and they aren't letting go of power. Under their lead, climate change has become the climate catastrophe and we have done little to nothing to avoid it.

The NYTimes just published a graphic that shows their grip on political power; the highest rate of increase on these graphs is in the last 10 years, when the oldest baby-boomers have become septuagenarians:

Thousands evacuated in 3 provinces as #Canadian #wildfires threaten #AirQuality into some US states

June 1, 2025

FLIN FLON, Manitoba (AP) — "More than 25,000 residents in three provinces have been evacuated as dozens of wildfires remained active Sunday and diminished air quality in parts of Canada and the U.S., according to officials.

"Most of the evacuated residents were from #Manitoba, which declared a state of emergency last week. About 17,000 people there were evacuated by Saturday along with 1,300 in #Alberta. About 8,000 people in #Saskatchewan had been relocated as leaders there warned the number could climb.

" 'Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour,' Saskatchewan’s Public Safety Agency warned Sunday. 'As smoke levels increase, health risks increase.' "

'It's very smoky here [and] it's getting thicker, because the fire's at our doorstep': Chief Monias

Darren Bernhardt · CBC News · Posted: May 29, 2025

"A wildfire is at the threshhold of Pimicikamak Cree Nation, choking the air with smoke, as the northern Manitoba community's leaders work to get 767 people out.

" 'Many that couldn't get out because the junction at Highway 374 and Highway 373 is their lifeline to Norway House, and now it's being compromised by the fire and the smoke,' Chief David Monias said Thursday morning.

"Pimicikamak had started a precautionary evacuation Friday as wildfires impacted air quality. Residents were flown out from the airport in the community, about 530 kilometres north of Winnipeg on the shores of Cross Lake, but high winds and dry conditions worsened the situation this week

[...]

"Those in Pimicikamak are among 17,000 expected to be evacuated as fires intensify in both northern and eastern Manitoba.

"Premier Wab Kinew on Wednesday evening declared a provincewide state of emergency.

"Evacuation orders have also been issued for #FlinFlon, #LynnLake, #Pukatawagan #Cree Nation (also known as Mathias Colomb First Nation), #MarcelColomb First Nation and #Sherridon.

"In addition to #NorwayHouse Cree Nation, #Chemawawin Cree Nation (Easterville) is under an evacuation notice, with people ordered to be ready to leave.

"The majority of the evacuees will head to Winnipeg and will be housed at large facilities such as community centres, soccer fields and arenas, Monias said."

Glacier collapse buries most of Swiss village

The most recent report into the condition of #Switzerland's #glaciers suggested they could all be gone within a century, if global temperatures could not be kept within a rise of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, agreed ten years ago by almost 200 countries under the Paris climate accord.

Many #climate #scientists suggest that target has already been missed, meaning the glacier thaw will continue to accelerate, increasing the risk of #flooding and #landslides, and threatening more communities like #Blatten.

The continued use of fossil fuels and other environmentally destructive practices have set the world on a course towards at least 2.5C of heating. This is almost certainly beyond the tipping points for the Greenland and west Antarctic ice sheets, and is expected to trigger what the researchers call a “really dire” sea level rise of around 12 metres.

New study reveals how competition between #algae is transforming the gulf of Maine
As the ocean warms across its temperate regions, #kelp forests are collapsing and turf algae species are taking over. This shift from dense canopies of tall kelp to low-lying mats of turf algae is driving biodiversity loss and altering the flow of energy and nutrients through reef #ecosystems.

EurekAlert!New study reveals how competition between algae is transforming the gulf of MaineNew research, led by Bigelow Laboratory scientists, shows how rapidly proliferating turf algae are waging “chemical warfare” to inhibit the recovery of kelp forests along Maine's warming coast.

So here is one of the effects of the #climatecatastrophe that people don't associate with #climate collapse.

It's not just floods, fires and heatwaves.

Here in South #Australia we had algea bloom for the last 10 weeks. It's is a result of a marine heat wave where the temperature of water is 2.5 degrees higher. We had them before, but this one is the longest ever.

Marine life is being washed dead on the shore, sharks are attacking people because their food webs are dying, jellyfish sting people in areas where they were not a problem.
When you go to the beach you will have difficulty breathing and have an allergic reaction. Some people living on the coastline are experiencing respiratory symptoms constantly.

The rich usually think they can survive the climate collapse because air-conditioning and food deliveries (actually I have no idea what's going on in their heads).

But this is one of the many, many, many #catastrophies we have no name for yet.

So you can now add "Algea Bloom" to "Fire Tornadoes" and "Rain Bombs".

Welcome to the end of #anthropocene .

Have a lovely Sunday and be excellent to each other.

P.S. The Government is trying to keep this very low key as we are trying to get tourists here. But here is the official page: pir.sa.gov.au/research/researc

In Poznań, Poland there is this artificial lake that every 4 years is emptied, cleaned and refilled again.

This time because of the ongoing drought there is not enough water to refill it, and it has been half empty since March.
