The last part of the book Talk: The Science of Conversation and the Art of Being Ourselves discusses conversations between people who may not agree. Other books have tackled this subject at length, so I won’t rehash the ideas here.

While some of the ideas in the book aren’t new (to me), I think they could be applied to collective benefit, both in person and on social media. Less one-upmanship, fewer “gotcha” questions, less correction, less ego. More question asking, more connection, and more kindness, most of all.

"Intentional kindness: humanity's superpower" - Futurist Jim Carroll, with a shoutout to Drew Sullivan, APB Speakers

The image in today's Inspiration features my good friend Michael Simon; the phrase, "intentional kindness," comes from one of my speaker bureau agents, Drew Sullivan. One teaches us the importance of finding moments of joy when we need it most and the importance of 'giving back'; the other involves intentionally making those moments of joy for others because they truly matter.

It's a long post, but I want you to read it.

Why? We seem to be living in a world in which the core values of human decency seem to be disappearing at the speed with which societal norms are unraveling. As an example, I have read that one of the latest trends with the tech oligarchs - folks like Elon Musk and the young men who worship them - is that they find it to be fashionable to use denigrating words and phrases. They seem to think that it is all one big joke and that somehow, this provides them a boost to their 'machismo' - far from it. Most recently, their childish immaturity has extended to the regular use of the 'retard,' as if that somehow empowers them and makes them stronger

I do not know what darkness lies in the depths of their soul, but I know I and others will fight this darkness with all our might.

So let me start with my friend Michael. Here's a photo from a few weeks ago when we were both wrapping up a wonderful ski day.

I've known Michael since he was 2 years old.

Now 29, he is a special needs young adult who has a unique genetic condition that has limited his full abilities - and yet, he has achieved capabilities that experts have said might never be possible.  It was said he could never ski - he learned to ski. It was said he would never be able to master a snowboard. Today, he 'shreds' with the best of them.

He has accomplished many other things in his life - and he has the most infectious smile of any person I have ever known.

You can't see Michael smile and, in these moments of despair, worry, and concern, find some joy some sort of joy creeping into your own heart. Michael's smile is a crucible of joy and a cauldron of inspiration.

We all need more moments like this. We should all find the joy around us because those are the moments that matter. You can help to 'generate it by getting involved, giving back, and supporting those who are under attack, marginalized, or who need attention and help. That's why social causes are even more important today than they were before.

Making connections

Writing a blog, sharing (long) Toots on different accounts on Mastodon, sharing snaps on Flickr and Pixelfed, sharing vids on PeerTube, sharing reels on Loops... Sharing is part of what I do. Do I think I am interesting enough? Maybe... I do think my life can be a bit of a bore at times, due to me having this whole routine. But I do try to be active. Not to only share good things, but to be real, and share the struggles as well. Although at times, sometimes it feels there are more struggles to share than good bits. Which can be a bit of a bummer at times. But why do I share? Hmm 🤔 I dunno, not really, to be honest. I feel it's like a way to journal, to document my journey through life, through the different mediums I just mentioned. I try to add info to relevant things. I try to add a nice snap or vid. On Masto, I'll throw in some funny emojis (I just love those!). I would like to connect to others. People that enjoy my stories, that enjoy the snaps and vids of Arwen, that also seek to connect with like-minded folks. Let my weirdo light shine bright so that the other "weirdos" (or, friendos, as I call them) may find me. […]

It's all about connections.
In a whimsical world, cats and fish can be friends instead of predator and prey. Strange beings can manifest out of the blue and dance among the flowers or spin in circles just for the fun of it! In a whimsical world, anything is possible.

(100% human-made) human imagined, drawn and painted, no AI whatsoever.

What small kindness have you spotted this week?

I was standing in the queue to order coffee in Café Nero and the lady in front of me said how much she liked my scarf. We had a quick conversation about the need for some sparkle in dreary January. It really made me smile!

The baristas clearly knew their regulars, of which this lady was one, and had a little chat with each of them – I think that helped encourage an environment of connection and kindness!

I’ve been here a while, but I’m just now posting an #Introduction. Why? I’ve been a bit shy to, and as an observer by nature, I wanted to understand what this space can offer and what I can offer in return.

I believe in kindness, curiosity, and the types of communication that can arise when people hold those two values close.

I’m looking to connect with people who want to have these types of conversations and prefer going below the surface, sharing personal experience, and practicing empathy.

I also appreciate those discussions, ideas, and facts in my feed that scratch my intellectual itch as well as the beautiful moments that people share. I moderately boost.

I’m interested in topics such as better communication, belonging and connection, art history, sociology, culture, and the preservation of our collective and individual humanity.

I have many causes that I care deeply about, such as women’s issues and intersectional feminism, human rights, and information about covid/public health, and media literacy. Books and Eastern Europe are also high on my list.

While I believe in staying aware, I rarely post about straight politics.

I’ve already connected with some thoughtful, insightful, caring, curious people – would love to meet more.

Community is central to the #wellbeing of humankind

I like that #mastadon particularly @hoosiersocial feels more like an online #community.

I also can’t help but think about how the obstreperous internet is not a safe place for vulnerability.

The world should not have access what is sacred to us as individuals and communities.

What makes you feel #connected and #grounded in this world that feels so disconnected from our human nature?

Who will you smile at this week?

Who do you want to share your internal radiance with a bright and open expression? Smiles are infectious – they make us feel better and they spread kindness. Who, this week, is deserving of your smile, might be buoyed by your smile, or needs your smile?
