Recommendations for beginners daw?
I'm teaching a 9 year old to play keys. He's been playing around with garage band and I'm trying to get him interested in building productions up more from scratch and playing and recording his own parts. He needs to build some simple grooves and play around recording something on the keys and loop just that one or two bars that sounds good.
Requirements are windows and free (or at least cheap)

Most expensive mics I've ever bought. Used that money from my recent clearouts to fund this, a new amp and a pedal.

Thanks to the people who recommended the pedal on here. Havent tried it out yet. Amp is incredible! Havent tried the mics yet either - bought for acoustic guitar, supposed to be the very best pencil condensers out there.

I'm planning to use what I've learned in the studio to make my next album at home.

RN I'm thinking of running everything to Reaper through the TASCAM Mk II, using the effect send outputs (Mk II doesn't have a "tape out" port).

Not sure how to deal with sync, beyond the zoom tool and eyeballs and ears.

I'm curious if anyone has some ideas about that?

Edit: it does have a "sync" out I'll have to play with

here's a video of #taggart resizing columns using docs.rs/unicode-width/latest/u to cut the string at the correct locations!

still doesn't save, still crashes on backspace, but at least it looks cute now! next - make it save tags, thanks to docs.rs/lofty (as recommended by codeberg.org/Frieder_Hannenheim), and that'll probably be the v0.1

TrimString and TrimStringRef are now available in the underlying framework, #tengri. all work on this precipitates into #tek, the original #tui #daw 😉

some of how *that* one looks like can be seen here: mastodon.social/@unspeaker/113

#ableton and pretty much any other #daw i've tried lets you group tracks, and collapse them. fair enough.

no daw i've seen lets you group and collapse "scenes" or any other section of time. just imagine having each track's arrangement in your setlist expandable in place, so you can easily do transitions and medleys... that's the kind of thing i'm tryna build.

screenshot of text user interface of music making program with oh so many stuff - multitrack arrangement grid with embedded sequencer, midi inputs and outputs, the rudiments of per-port + per-channel midi routing, et cetera. the tracks, clips, and scenes that make up a project are colored in random, yet uniformly joyful colors.
Mastodonstateful being (@unspeaker@mastodon.social)Attached: 1 image avast ye scurvy docs, it's not like it totally works yet but i think it's about time to introduce you to the results of the past has it been another fucking month already. this is #tek, the prototype #daw in #rust for the #linux #tui environment. it aspires to be the missing link for the entire #jack ecosystem, but right now it strives to become a damn good #midi #sequencer.

Went just a little OTT with the MHCSong today. The big workstation did well but the mobile PC doesn't get it loaded. Who would have thought adding lots and lots of synths and samplers ( Native Instruments is awesome btw.!) would cause problems!? 😁

Sadly didn't think of freezing the tracks. So either i go on the big plugin-disable-challenge or i have to wait till next studio time.

To all the music nerds, how do you handle projects between systems?
