Scott Murray :neurodiversity:<p>Sure, they unbricked a train 😮 but the truly surprising part of this story is that Google returned a useful result 😂</p><p>&gt; “This is quite a peculiar part of the story—when SPS was unable to start the trains and almost gave up on their servicing, someone from the workshop typed "polscy hakerzy" (‘Polish hackers’) into Google,” the team from Dragon Sector, made up of Jakub Stępniewicz, Sergiusz Bazański, and Michał Kowalczyk, told me in an email. “Dragon Sector popped up and soon after we received an email asking for help.”</p><p><a href="https://www.404media.co/polish-hackers-repaired-trains-the-manufacturer-artificially-bricked-now-the-train-company-is-threatening-them/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">404media.co/polish-hackers-rep</span><span class="invisible">aired-trains-the-manufacturer-artificially-bricked-now-the-train-company-is-threatening-them/</span></a></p><p>Story by <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@jasonkoebler" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>jasonkoebler</span></a></span> from Dec. 2023 (I’m just seeing it now) featuring <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://social.hackerspace.pl/@q3k" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>q3k</span></a></span>, <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@redford" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>redford</span></a></span>, &amp; <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@mrtick" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>mrtick</span></a></span>.</p><p>Original toot: <a href="https://social.hackerspace.pl/@q3k/111528162462505087" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">social.hackerspace.pl/@q3k/111</span><span class="invisible">528162462505087</span></a></p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/trains" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trains</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/hacking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hacking</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/DRM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DRM</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/enshittification" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>enshittification</span></a></p>
Martin Guay 👨‍💻🌈🎮📱🍁<p>I'm noticing a rise in software, media, and game piracy again. Why?</p><p>Because people are fed up.</p><p>SaaS fatigue. Subscription overload. Constant price hikes with minimal improvements. Products we never truly "own." DRM that breaks more than it protects.</p><p>It’s no longer just about "getting it free"—for many, it’s a protest. When Photoshop is $30/month and requires internet to launch, and movies are split across 6+ overpriced services, people will rebel.</p><p>We’ve modernized the tools, but repeated the mistake:<br>Make access too expensive or too frustrating, and piracy becomes a more ethical experience.</p><p>People don’t want to be free. They want fairness.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/FOSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FOSS</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/SaaS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SaaS</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Piracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Piracy</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/DigitalOwnership" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalOwnership</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/DRM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DRM</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Streaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Streaming</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/TechEthics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TechEthics</span></a></p>
Defective by Design<p>When we're as surrounded by streaming platforms as we are now, it's easy to forget that the DRM-free life still exists. Even now, there are dozens of record labels, publishers, and online retailers that refuse to abuse their customers. Floreana<p>OK, I need the e-reader community's help once again! 🙏 </p><p>So, I just purchased (small sum, just because I wanted to try) a title from the official Kobo store. But I don't have a Kobo reader!</p><p>I have, in fact, a jailbroken 2018 Kindle PaperWhite with KOreader on it.</p><p>The question is: how do I access my newly purchased ttile? Downloading it via browser from the store window provides me with a .acsm file I'm not sure what to do with.</p><p>Never dealt with Kobo before, so I'm pretty at a loss. I'm thankful for any pointers to useful resources, or just tell me I'm screwed if that's the case. 😆 </p><p>Potentially relevant info: my desktop computer runs on Linux Mint exclusively and yep, I have Caliber for all the de-DRM and conversion stuff.</p><p><a href="https://poliversity.it/tags/kobo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kobo</span></a> <a href="https://poliversity.it/tags/ebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ebook</span></a> <a href="https://poliversity.it/tags/ebooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ebooks</span></a> <a href="https://poliversity.it/tags/drm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>drm</span></a> <a href="https://poliversity.it/tags/kindle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kindle</span></a></p>
