I'm a lifelong believer in the power of FOSS and open standards (see RFC 2326), but the reason why I started the discussion with Tim Bray and Greg Vernon and others on BlueSky was because I was looking for mainstream alternatives to Facebook for non-techie relatives. Saying "just run a server" isn't going to work for mainstream adoption.
