A brand new episode of Redefining #Society & #Technology Podcast, on ITSPmagazine

Living Forever (Sort Of): AI Clones, Digital Ghosts, and the Problem with Perfection

Bruce Y. Lee and I met once again in our favorite make-believe bar to explore what might be one of the most unsettling — and fascinating — questions of our time: What happens when your AI clone outlives you?

In this episode, Bruce Y. Lee and I explore digital immortality, algorithmic relationships, and what makes a person… well, a person. Star Trek, deepfakes, AI therapists, and dead celebrities all make an appearance. Is it still you if your clone outlives you?

Let’s discuss!

– Star Trek ethics and uncanny valleys

– ChatGPT friendships that feel a little too real

– What it means to build a digital legacy you never signed off on

– And whether a recreated version of “you” is still… you 👻 🫢

From #holograms to memory simulations, #socialengineering to emotional #algorithms, we’re not here to decide what’s right or wrong — just to ask: where does reality end, and where does the replica begin?

Bluesky is facing a surge in impersonation scams. Users are being tricked by fake profiles mimicking tech personalities. Despite efforts to remove these accounts, the decentralized nature of Bluesky makes it challenging to manage. The platform is exploring new verification methods to combat this issue and protect its users.

Great observation about digital identity/authentication online today:

Providers have quietly, slowly, been outsourcing the customer relationship to data-rich 3rd parties.

@aligorith Digital exclusion includes people with insufficient ability or capacity to interact online in ways that enable them to lead full lives. NZ Parliament discussed this in 2022 but no action and certainly not any requirement that #DigitalIdentity systems would have alternative options for people who can't use a system set up by a financial services provider.

So much hypocrisy in statements about "an easier and secure" system.

The deal was made even though more than 500 scientists and numerous NGOs in an open letter „strongly warn against the currently proposed trilogue agreement, as it fails to properly respect the right to privacy of citizens and secure online communications“ – criticism which the Pirate Party Members of the European Parliament underline.

“This regulation is a blank cheque for surveillance of citizens online, endangering our privacy and security online”, comments Pirate Party lawmaker Patrick Breyer. “Browser security is being undermined, and overidentification will gradually erode our right to use digital services anonymously. Mark Zuckerberg should have no right to see our ID! Entrusting our digital lives to the government instead of Facebook and Google is jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. This deal sacrifices essential requirements the European Parliament had put forward to make the eID app privacy-friendly and secure. The EU misses the opportunity to establish a trustworthy framework for modernization and digitization. We will watch the implementation very closely.”"

@cestfleuve I agree it's weird and unhelpful, much like the whole of the #DigitalIdentity focus.

Much debate has been on the finance sector protecting their services not about making it easier for people, including making sure systems are #accessible so disabled customers can use them.
