If you're going to choose a cloud hosting provider, please do not use #DigitalOcean Digital Ocean does not pay attention to abuse reports. They do not take offending hosts offline. They allow hosts to continue making intrusion attempts, port scanning, and all kinds of nefarious activities. Fuck Digital Ocean! Use a reputable cloud hosting provider.

Digital Ocean maintenance is currently in progress NYC1. It was supposed to start soon and take 2 hours. If you use DO, I would recommend subscribing to their status. I have found doing so has kept my need to troubleshoot Mastodon failures in Sidekiq down, as well as my aggravation. #DigitalOcean

This scheduled maintenance is going to affect: Cloud Firewall, Kubernetes (NYC1), Managed Databases (NYC1), App Platform (New York), Droplets (NYC1), Load Balancers (NYC1), and Networking (NYC1).

NYC1 Network Maintenance on #DigitalOcean

Scheduled for Jun 18, 22:00 UTC - Jun 19, 00:00 UTC

During the above window, our Networking team will be making changes to the core networking infrastructure to improve performance and scalability in the NYC1 region.

Expected impact:

During the maintenance window, users may experience delays or failures with event processing for a brief duration on Droplets and Droplet-based services, including Droplets, Managed Kubernetes, Load Balancers, Container Registry, and App Platform. Additionally, regular requests via the Public API, as well as viewing and submitting requests through the Cloud Control Panel, may time out or fail for up to 5 minutes. We will endeavor to keep this to a minimum for the duration of the change.

Any #MastoAdmin with #DigitalOcean notice a lot of sidekiq errors overnight "Seahorse::Client::NetworkingError: Failed to open TCP connection to nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com:443 (execution expired)" I'm at several thousand now.

Started out of the blue. I only noticed because images were staying blurred for a while. Even when images unblurred, any video coming in was staying blurred with the link to the original post at the sending instance.

For a long time, I already had S3_OPEN_TIMEOUT and S3_READ_TIMEOUT increased.

It seems to be tampering off now, although videos seem to have an issue being blurred.

Was there a #DigitalOcean burp today for NYC3 spaces? I had 678 timeouts over the half a day sitting in my Sidekiq morgue #Mastoadmin. I guess that isn't too bad considering the volume of posts that comes down the federated firehose, but it's been a while since this has happened.

<sysadmin stuff>

The AWS SDK for S3 suddenly stopped working for my non-AWS object stores (DigitalOcean, R2, etc)...and I thought I was losing my mind.

Well, looks like AWS decided to stop allowing others to leverage/freeload their software for use on competing services.

Understandable-ish, but doing it suddenly, know that stuff would break - on top of AWS blatantly making bank on services based on OSS software - well, that makes for some very bad karma. :sad_dog:

Me to #DigitalOcean support: my droplet has been running for a few days and then kernel panicking with errors in the block layer requiring a reboot, I think there might be a drive problem.
DO support: If your droplet won't boot, it's probably the boot loader [boot loader troubleshooting paste].
Me: ...

I've been happy with these guys for a long time, but this is not confidence-inspiring.

Just got a TOS and Privacy update email from #DigitalOcean. The email had no links. Also said there was a new section coving their use of Generative AI. "This new section also contains general Service Terms that apply to all services, as well as terms specific to generative AI features of select DigitalOcean services and our GenAI Platform Service."

Once I went to DO website, the privacy policy was easy to find on the main page, but the terms weren't. It was easy to find under Legal link. digitalocean.com/legal. I guess that makes sense and is easy enough.

I also found the terms by going to docs, docs.digitalocean.com/products, and then the footer

It also looks like we are saddled to agreeing with Meta terms of service since they are using their models for the "DigitalOcean GenAI Platform Service." I assume that is only if we use their GenAI services, but unsure, really. Still reading over the other "select DigitalOcean services " that an AI policy might relate to that may saddle me to Meta.

"Meta Llama Models. Meta Llama models are licensed under the Meta Llama 3 Community License, Copyright © Meta Platforms, Inc. All Rights Reserved: A copy of that license is available here: llama.meta.com/llama3/license/."

#Vultr Enshitification

Dear Vultr.com,

Are you really accepting venture capital? This will not end well. The piper has to be paid. The venture capitalists will want their pound of flesh. The reason I loved Vutr is because it was privately owned. We saw what happened to #digitalocean When the venture capitalists move in, the customers get screwed.

Are you really investing in AI? Have you gone mad, like everyone else?

So I think it's clear after this outage, I do not recommend #DigitalOcean anymore.

It took an hour and a half for them to acknowledge a global outage. This is absolutely unacceptable.

We will be moving our 6TB media CDN off of DigitalOcean as soon as I can find the time to do it. Outages, even if we're not responsible for them, reflect poorly on us as our hands were tied, and I'm not interested in being in this position again.

Enough is enough.

UPDATE: a sharp eye noticed that the domain “digitaloceanspaces.com” is currently in “clientHold” status.

ICANN defines this: “This status code tells your domain's registry to not activate your domain in the DNS and as a consequence, it will not resolve. It is an uncommon status that is usually enacted during legal disputes, non-payment, or when your domain is subject to deletion.”

Yiiiiikes.
