Shannon Meilak - Advocate
Every time I post something like this, there is always that person who wants to label me a killjoy or something worse. I ask you to read this post in it's entirety before commenting. You do not have to agree with me, but calling me a killjoy for wanting to provide an inclusive community and protect our animals and environment says more about you than it does about me.
I do not want to take away your entertainment, I want to make our entertainment as accessible and harmless as possible.

Transitioning away from traditional fireworks is crucial for various reasons, encompassing public health, environmental impact, and the well-being of animals and humans.

Health Impacts: Traditional fireworks release pollutants that worsen air quality, affecting individuals with bronchial conditions and causing distress to those with sensory conditions like Autism. For those with PTSD, the loud explosions can trigger anxiety and trauma, potentially leading to an increased risk of suicide. Veterans are particularly vulnerable. Alternative celebrations are needed for inclusivity.

Environmental Impact: Fireworks contribute to air and water pollution, harming ecosystems and aquatic life. The generated waste adds to environmental degradation. Adopting alternatives that produce fewer pollutants and less waste is vital for sustainable celebrations.

Impact on Animals: Companion animals, stressed by the loud noises, can become lost and suffer injuries, while wildlife faces fatalities and habitat disruption. Avian species may collide with structures, species that use eco-location can die of sonic shock and the disturbance can interfere with crucial reproductive behaviours. Alternatives are crucial for minimising these adverse effects and preserving biodiversity.

Fire Risk: Fireworks pose a hazard, leading to accidental fires, property damage, and harm to humans and animals. The risk of bushfires is heightened, causing habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity.

Alternatives and Considerations: Eco-friendly alternatives like water projection shows, drone displays, or laser and light shows, reduce stress on individuals and mitigate the risk of wildlife fatalities and habitat destruction. Raising awareness about PTSD triggers and sensory discomfort contributes to a more inclusive community atmosphere. These alternatives also align with principles of environmental sustainability and community well-being.

Transitioning from traditional fireworks considers health, environmental, and animal impacts. Adopting alternative celebrations fosters sustainability, inclusivity, and compassion in community events. This is not about ending your entertainment but rather changing how we are entertained to be more inclusive and less destructive.

f you want to see us become a more inclusive, less destructive and less selfish society, please sign and share the petition below.
