So, the players have developed a vitriolic, uncompromising hate towards the campaign villain, and want to kill him on sight.

Time to redeem him, by first making him into an unreliable third party, then evolving him into a powerful ally that the group would risk their lives for.

(Easily one of my favourite tropes in TTRPGs)
