A friend and I were talking about <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/ThreadsApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThreadsApp</span></a>, which they were not particularly interested in, and I brought up <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a>. </p><p>They asked what it was, and I said it was <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> and used <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a>. They had no idea what that meant, so I switched to talking in terms of values.</p><p>I've never considered myself tech savvy. I work on web content, but I'm not a developer. I don't code. I assumed if I could understand Mastodon, anyone could—if I knew what open source meant and what Activity Pub was, everyone else must too. </p><p>I think I underestimated my tech knowledge and others' lack of knowledge, like the opposite of the <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/DunningKrugerEffect" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DunningKrugerEffect</span></a>. And I think if we want to draw people away from <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Threads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Threads</span></a>, we're going to have to discuss Mastodon less technically and more in terms of values and community.</p><p>In the bright side, I don't think many people are aware of or interested in Threads, and my friend now hates <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Meta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Meta</span></a>/ <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Facebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Facebook</span></a> even more!</p>
