Some people slander #retrocomputing as an old man’s game, just because most of those involved are more ancient than the hardware they’re playing with. But there are veritable children involved too — take the [ComputerSmith], who is recreating Conway’s game of life on a Macintosh Plus that could very well be as old as his parents.

“This is the biography of an extraordinary family, an impossible sea and an engineering miracle”

Bella Bathurst’s THE LIGHTHOUSE STEVENSONS tells the story of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ancestors – four generations who designed & built the great lights around Scotland. They were lifesavers & pioneers, & their lives were as full of drama & adventure as anything RLS wrote.

I am job hunting if anyone is looking for an #IT #engineer

I currently work in Mergers and Acquisitions as an IT specialist in the embroidery field, but I have experience with #Cisco #networking including their Firepower ASA and their switches. I am also an #MDM engineer and I am the team lead for SOP writing and development.

I would like to get back into a #datacenter job. I am comfortable with #travel and I'm comfortable with #parttime and #contract work if you have any recommendations.

I won't do defence companies though.

Hey, #FediHire me! 🥳
I'm looking for a decent #job, preferably remote.
Any help is appreciated.

I bring a ton of skills and more than a decade of experience as a #software #engineer, have been working mostly on #web #applications and some #mobile over the years, and done lots of #systems programming and #firmware in my spare time projects. 🧑‍💻⚙️

My main languages are Rust and JavaScript/TypeScript.
I'm based in Germany.

More details and CV are at dan.orangecms.org/.

Please #boost, thanks!

“Glasses” that transcribe Text to Audio.

Glasses for the blind might sound like an odd idea, given the traditional purpose of glasses and the issue of vision impairment. However, [Akhil Nagori] built these glasses with an alternate purpose in mind. They’re not really for seeing. Instead, they’re outfitted with hardware to capture text & read it aloud.

I think there's an #engineer that deserves a shout out here. (JPL) “These thrusters were considered dead. And that was a legitimate conclusion. It’s just that one of our engineers had this insight that maybe there was this other possible cause and it was fixable. It was yet another miracle save for Voyager.”

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)NASA’s Voyager 1 Revives Backup Thrusters Before Command PauseThe mission team wanted to fix the thrusters, deemed unusable decades ago, before the radio antenna that sends commands to the probe went offline for upgrades.

:raspberrypi: This old Phone reads Poetry to you using a Raspberry Pi Zero.

There are all sorts of ways to revitalize old hardware, but throwing a Raspberry Pi into the mix is a sure way to get me excited. This project, does just that with a really clever upgrade to a vintage phone. When you pick up the receiver of this phone, you'll be met with a random audio recording of a poem.
