Getting feedback on my #EuroBSDcon 2023 talk about #relayd on… #LinkedIn 😳 It is so weird to have real nice exchange on this platform…

And in case you wonder, the talk is available here: https://exquisite.tube/w/qCjzahEmgbo93RU7gxMN18

And the text-only material is available here: https://www.tumfatig.net/2023/using-openbsd-relayd8-as-an-application-layer-gateway/

Both should still be relevant these days, hopefully 🤞😬

Don't be a fool (like I was) when it comes to #jails on #FreeBSD. I ignored them despite using FreeBSD for decades, because I had no problem that could not be solved w/o them and thought "why learn yet another technology I barely need".

But it's not only about solving problems. It gives you a super lightweight and fast tool to test things (and trashing 🗑️ them with zfs destroy) without cluttering your configs or interfering with production services.

E.g. I hesitated to run a webserver for publishing content because I didn't want a publicly accessible Apache on my mail relays, nor on my Nextcloud instance at home.

With jails, the MX is left unmodified. If I feel like it I could move it to a different system just using tar or cpio or zfs send.

All I needed to accomplish that was a few shell scripts to initially generate a jail template and, of course, the invaluable book "FreeBSD Mastery: Jails" of @mwl .

What motivated me to get started? All the
speakers at #EuroBSDCon showing what incredible things they do with Jails. Especially >>IMUNES: A Network Emulation and Simulation Tool Built on FreeBSD<<.

If you want to watch the IMUNES talk you can find the link on my jailed webserver 😉 here pub.v32bis.cc/eurobsdcon.html

Recovering and reminiscing on an incredible #EuroBSDCon 2025 in Zagreb, Croatia! 🇭🇷 :flan_sad:

What a week! Over 220 attendees, 48 brilliant speakers, and 16 amazing sponsors came together to celebrate all things #BSD. The energy was #BSD, deep dives into tech, inspiring talks, and those hallway conversations that spark new ideas and collaborations.

Huge shoutout to the video crew who made sure every moment was captured, and to everyone who traveled near and far to be part of this vibrant community. Whether it was hacking, learning, or just geeking out over #BSD, the connections made here are what make this event so special.

Zagreb, and the incredible Organizing Committee, you were the perfect host! Already counting down to the next one in Brussels! 🇧🇪

Did you attend? What was your highlight? 👇

We are collecting as much as possible on: 2025.eurobsdcon.org/wrapup.htm

I wish I could be at EuroBSDCon this year, but something else overlapped.
Truth is, I still don’t feel ready to come back ... not in person, and not even virtually in the community space.

That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped caring. Quite the opposite: I still care deeply about FreeBSD, about BSD in general, and about the people who keep it moving forward. That part never left me.

A special thought goes to two people who were there this year. I would have loved to see you, even if I’m not at my brightest right now. 💜

Maybe one day I’ll join back again. For now, I prefer to observe and care from afar.

Lots of hugs 💜 🌷

@EuroBSDCon was a blast as always. The amount of work put in by the organisers is incredible, and both the local crew (Karlo and friends, you've been a great help and I owe you an audio cable!) and the video gang (@mischa@exquisite.social, your camera saved the day .. reluctantly; @dexter and the rest of the @bsdtv gang y'all gonna need better dongles ;) bent over backwards to accommodate my somewhat eccentric needs.

If anyone is interested in what I had to say (and hand out) during my talk, the QR code at the end leads to http://anduin.net/l.htm - go grab your copy in any of three formats: Bootable floppy, zipped TheDraw files, or PDF (boo!).

I met too many awesome people to count, much less remember the names of everyone, but I truly hope those of you who want to reach out will do so. My DMs are open ;)

The social overload from this weekend will quickly turn into the pain of missing the company of this extended family. Can't wait to see you again in Brussels - or at any time before that if you visit Oslo!

Good morning Zagreb!
