Forgot to share this interview with co-owner of Rise & Root Farm, Karen Washington. She went from creating a garden in a vacant Bronx lot to opening a farm that just received its organic certification. She also coined the term #FoodApartheid. It's pouring rain here today, so its a great day to stay inside and have a listen.

I had to go along to Craig's to tell him some of his Swaledales had broken through a wall into his neighbour's field by Unthank. They've taken the top of the wall off, so might be a job for me later. His son Cal was set on to throw the stones back up to fill the gap temporarily.

I had a look at his Spotties in the fields near the farm, which are looking good in this decent weather. The lambs are a mixture, some spotty on white, some all darker brown.

As Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs took effect, U.S. farmers hoping for a profit this year instead found themselves facing lower crop prices — and the prospect of ceding more ground in foreign markets. japantimes.co.jp/business/2025 #business #economy #us #farming #donaldtrump #trade #tradewars #tariffs

The Japan Times · 'Anxious' U.S. farmers see tariffs as threatening earningsBy Beiyi Seow

Busy morning, and now nursing sore muscles. Picked up several hundred pounds of feed for the fowl, then went to a neighbor's house and shoveled up 2 yards of maple tree mulch that I ground up after last years hurricanes. I'll be using the mulch in the gardens. #farming

After reading about bee death in southern Sweden and in the US, this article about Romania haystacks felt extra important. I can imagine it is all bleepin' hard work, but I think we need a bit more - or a lot more - entymology love in the world.

"Big, biodiverse and beautiful: can Romania’s centuries-old giant haystacks survive modern farming?" From The Guardian's The Age of Extinction series.

Another farmer-initiated heath fire gets hopelessly and inevitably out of control in winds gusting up to 40mph near Porthmadog today. Multiple fire units now having to try and stop it in incredibly challenging conditions.

Plume visible in satellite images, stretching across the Irish Sea just south of Anglesey, over to Northern Ireland.

"A growing body of fiction and film ... deals with farmers' threatened way of life and their increasing unrest as a result of policies meant to curb climate change or temper its effects," writes Bartolomeo Sala in The Dial. Here's his story about "Creation Lake" by Rachel Kushner, "Cosas Vivas" by Munir Hachemi, "As Bestas," directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and "Alcarrás," directed by Carla Simón. "The conflict between farmers and the green transition is a new phenomenon," Sala says. "Yet the way that recent works of fiction portray this conflict often feels remarkably familiar, playing into an old idea of the countryside as a remnant bound to be destroyed by the march of progress."

The DialRural Fictions — The DialFarming vs. the earth in contemporary film.

Working in a dairy - essentially a wet industrial facility slick with cow shit and populated by unpredictable 600kg animals - comes with its own set of inherent risks. You watch for them pretty much constantly.

One of the things you tend not to watch for are things like this - deep chafing grazes from wearing nitrile milking gloves for 25 hours this week. Sore and I’ll need to dress it somehow to protect it next week.

Rural Banter in Cork

Tucked away on the serene Sherkin Island in County Cork, I stumbled upon a timeless moment that felt plucked from another era. Two older men, clearly no strangers to the soil beneath them, were deep in conversation.

This photo was taken in 2015 while on a visit to the island. I hope they are still living on the island, chatting away.
