Tamsin Lewis<p>Greensleeves Project update for World Embroidery Day.<br>There are a few embroidered items among the gifts presented to Greensleeves in the song, including "a smock of silk, both faire and white, with gold embrodered gorgeously"<br>The wonderful Juliet Braidwood is working on the smock, embroidering it with black silk and gold thread, using designs taken from contemporary sources. This photograph shows part of her work on a rose, taken from a detail on Nicholas Hilliard's 'Pelican' portrait of Elizabeth I, c1575.<br>The Greensleeeves Project is supported by The Society of Antiquaries of London<br>More details here <a href="https://passamezzo.uk/greenproj.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">passamezzo.uk/greenproj.html</span><span class="invisible"></span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/worldembroideryday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>worldembroideryday</span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Tudor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tudor</span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Tudors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tudors</span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/elizabethi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>elizabethi</span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Greensleeves" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greensleeves</span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/greensleevesproject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>greensleevesproject</span></a><br><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/histodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>histodon</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/histodons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>histodons</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/earlymodern" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>earlymodern</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/FashionHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FashionHistory</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/textiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>textiles</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/embroidery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>embroidery</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/blackwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blackwork</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/earlymodern" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>earlymodern</span></a></span> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>histodon</span></a></span></p>
Real Syntactic<p>This blouse was made by my great-grand aunt (my grandmother’s aunt) in Coniston, Westmorland, around 1900. She was a single mum and taught needlework to younger village women. My 87-year-old aunt shortened the sleeves in the 50s in Oregon. I am so happy it has survived and I can wear it (to a friend’s daughter’s graduation party this afternoon.) <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/womensart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>womensart</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/fashionhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fashionhistory</span></a></p>
Fred<p>Happy Saturday! Here's a quilted petticoat dating from around 1760-80, sewn by Mary Preston. Nothing is yet known about her, but research is underway! </p><p>It's made of silk, wool and linen, and is terrifying to handle because the silk is gently shattering throughout. Happily, the linen lining is super robust and is keeping everything together. </p><p><a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/HistoricalCostume" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoricalCostume</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/HistoricalTextiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoricalTextiles</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Quilting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Quilting</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/GeorgianFashion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeorgianFashion</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/FashionHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FashionHistory</span></a></p>
Cassidy Percoco<p>For Throwback Thursday, a blog post I wrote on a wedding dress in my 2021 exhibition, Elegant New York. Note that this is the earliest example of a gown with a maker's label, as far as I'm aware (take that, Charles Frederick Worth)! <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/fashionhistory" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>fashionhistory</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/FashionHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FashionHistory</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/19thcentury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>19thcentury</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://mimicofmodes.com/2021/12/27/wedding-dress-made-by-jane-warnock-1837/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mimicofmodes.com/2021/12/27/we</span><span class="invisible">dding-dress-made-by-jane-warnock-1837/</span></a></p>
