You can post a poll on Mastodon by clicking the 📊 bar chart icon when you're creating a post, then adding options.

If you're using the web interface or a third party app, you can set the poll to allow multiple responses or just single responses. The web interface also allows poll durations to be as short as 5 minutes.

⚠️ You can edit polls, but if you edit a poll's options the votes get reset to zero.

The Fediverse has a video platform called PeerTube, which works a bit like YouTube but doesn't have any ads. It's really nice!

Here is a guide to how to use PeerTube, how to discover PeerTube videos, how to follow and interact with PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-use-peertub

I've tried to cover all the common questions about PeerTube, let me know if you have a question that isn't listed in the guide 🙂

You can set Mastodon's web interface to be in another language if you want:

1. Log in through your server’s website or the web app
2. Click ⚙️ Preferences
3. Select the language you want from the dropdown "Interface Language" menu
4. Click "Save Changes" button

You don't have to use your server's default language, all the languages are available on all the servers.

This only works when you're signed in though, so you will still see your server's language on the sign-in page.

The new version of #Fedialgo is much, much faster at loading and reordering the timeline. Also has fancy gradients to show you which hashtags in your feed are the ones trending the most and which ones you post about the most. Also a bunch of other tweaks and improvements.

You don't need to use weird spellings or algospeak for any topics on the Fediverse ("unalived", "seggs" etc). There is no automated moderation or algorithm on here, moderation happens entirely through human beings and posts are shown in chronological order.

In fact it's better that you use the correct spellings for difficult topics so that people with genuine traumas related to them can filter them more easily.

Mastodon supports post editing, you can edit any of your own posts any time by clicking ⋯ and then "Edit".

If you forget to add an image description, you can edit your post to add the description afterwards.

(Just mentioning this because still seeing people forgetting descriptions and adding them in replies, it seems they don't know about post editing.)

GoToSocial is a lightweight safety-focused Fediverse server type popular among people who run their own servers.

It's now much easier to run your own GoToSocial server as it's available through managed hosting, where the hosting company does all the techy stuff for you:

You can also transfer your Mastodon account to GoToSocial:

There are four main timelines on Mastodon:

Home - Your default timeline, posts from people & tags & groups you follow

Explore/Trending - Shows most boosted recent posts, most used tags, most shared links

Local - Latest public posts from people on your server (also called Live Feeds: This Server)

Federated - Latest public posts visible to your server from across the Fediverse (also called Live Feeds: All)

More info about these on the timelines guide:

Less discussed lessons I learned early in my days in the Fediverse, which I hope helped in making me a bit more welcoming, inclusive of a person:
-> Don't assume genders in others.
-> Don't use abbreviations for states or regions. Many people outside of your home country do not know what they mean, nor should they.
-> Don't assume reference points, such as products, geography, or concepts. Sharing supporting web links on neutral places like Wikipedia or images in a post greatly helps in finding a common ground.
-> The Translate feature, when available in your Fediverse browsing tool of choice, helps in connecting with cool people who just don't happen to post in your language of choice.

You can now send replies to Toots as well as expand threads directly within the #FediAlgo demo app, no need to click through to the regular Mastodon web interface.

If you see "🧵 1/3" or "2/5" or "🧵" or similar at the end of a post, it means it's part of a thread of posts.

You can create a thread here by replying to your own post, then replying to that reply, and repeating this until you have a long chain of posts called a thread.

You can see the thread a post comes from by clicking on it, this takes you to an enlarged view where you can scroll up or down to see the whole thread.

More info about creating threads at:

@FediTips

How can I find out what best practice / group conscience is about hashtags in threads?

When I do a thread, I hashtag each post. Another person says I should hashtag the first post but not the rest.

I'd like to search for whether this topic has come up and what people said.

Do I do a poll? A toot? Search a hashtag? Something else?

TIA

If anyone else knows an answer, I'm happy to hear it. Boosts too.

When you're signing up on a server or moving your account to a different server, you have to choose a username. This is the name that appears when people mention you in posts (when they @ you). It's worth spending a bit of time on choosing a good one, because it's difficult to change it later.

Here are some tips on how to choose a good username:

➡️ fedi.tips/choosing-a-good-user

It also goes over options for changing the username if you have to.

I have posted about this before, but wanted to re-iterate how much in love I am with FediAlgo:

I’m currently on paternity leave so have around half an hour per day for social. That is of course far from enough to keep up with a chronological timeline like mine, and previously with Mastodon the FOMO was real.

Now I go to FediAlgo and I feel I got an overview over what’s interesting in that day. It’s also immensely customisable, but the defaults do a decent job for me.

If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend you try it out. You can try it out on my personal playground at fedialgo.thms.uk or on the maintainer’s official website at michelcrypt4d4mus.github.io/fe

Thanks @cryptadamist for the work you put into this!
