Generally most people only need one account on the Fediverse, because the servers talk to each other as if they were on a single network.

However, in some situations and for some purposes you may prefer to use multiple accounts. If you're one of these people, there's a guide to using multiple accounts here:

➡️ fedi.tips/using-multiple-accou

Also see the article on why most people don't need multiple accounts:

I believe that the #fediverse is perfectly positioned to be an environment for the good. The #federated nature of it is consistent with freedom of speech, Instance based moderation of toots, non profit and voluntary.

It is very much self-regulating, allowing each individual to decide what they see on their timeline. Individual can also swap instances based on their criteria until they find a ‘home’. Moreover, the ability to block out rogue instances which breach the rules (set up by each individual instances) ensure that such rogue or misbehaving instances don’t get all the oxygen they desperately seek.

In sum, the Fediverse is a healthy, evolving environment equiped to deal with the worst of social media’s harm. Just relax, engage, mute, block, petition your admins to block rogue instances, and enjoy ad-free and algorithmic targeting-free social interactions.

I’m a nube here, so happy to stand corrected.

FediAlgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, is now deployed on Github Pages and can be used from your web browser.

If you want to, you can optionally set some or all of your Mastodon posts to self-delete after a certain amount of time. There's a complete guide to how to do this here:

➡️ fedi.tips/deleting-posts-autom

The guide also answers lots of questions about auto-deletion including its effects and how to adjust its settings.

Bear in mind that deleted posts cannot be restored, they are actually deleted! Be really sure you want to use this feature before you activate it.

Am looking for a new host to move to, not because this one has a lot of down time but because Mastodon . Social refuse to up the 500 character limit and it's getting to be too much of a limitation & too annoying for me, suggestions on hosts welcome (not Aus . Social or Mastodon . Au, I've tried those).

Prerequisites needed:
- Minimum 1000+ character posts
- Minimum 99% uptime

@FediTips

On Mastodon, if you've clicked a "Follow" button and it turns into "Pending" or "Cancel Follow" or "Request Sent", it means the follow hasn't actually happened yet.

Usually it's because the account has follow requests switched on, so you just wait for them to approve your request.

However, sometimes it's due to other reasons, and you may have to do something special to get the follow to work. Lots of info and full instructions at:

Have you seen a :Fediverse: rainbow pentagon thing and wondered what it means?

It's the logo of the Fediverse, the overall network which contains Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, BookWyrm, OwnCast and other platforms that communicate using a common standard.

There are high quality versions here:

➡️ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil (colour)

➡️ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil (mono)

Technically there can be no official logo on a decentralised network, but this is the most commonly-used logo.

I started a reply earlier today and saved it as an unfinished draft. I've looked in vain for it on both the iOS versions of Ice Cubes and Mastodon, and also on the web based Mastodon browser. I can't find where drafts are stored. Any pointers, or are they just sucked into a vast black hole of enormous potential and entertainment?

Just updated the custom emoji guide so that it also explains how to add custom emoji to your profile name:

➡️ fedi.tips/what-are-custom-emoj

If you're unsure what custom emoji are, the guide explains all about them and how to use them.

TL:DR - Custom emoji are special emoji added by your server admin that you can use in your posts. People on other servers can see your custom emoji, so you can add cool images in posts that they can't (unless their admin added the same ones) :rickroll:

Are you trying to verify your website link on your Mastodon profile? Is it not working? Is it failing to turn green?

If so, try some of the suggestions on this troubleshooting list:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-a

If none of these work, try putting the verification in your site's header instead (details are in the same guide just below the troubleshooting list).

The fine @michael has deployed the #FediAlgo demo app to a place where you can test out the customizable algorithm + filtering system for your home timeline with nothing more than a web browser. You can find it here:

If you see a reply in your timeline, you can see the discussion thread it comes from by just clicking on the reply. This will show the reply itself in an enlarged format, and you can see the rest of the thread by scrolling up or down.

:boosts_ok: Mental Health PSA: here's a gentle reminder that you can make filters and set each to either force-CW posts or remove them from your timeline entirely :frog_blush: (with options to affect posts in other places as well)

it's a life-saver for dealing with self-important <expletive>s that refuse to CW their posts, though it's not fool-proof in dealing with people that refuse to CW *and* refuse to actually put key words in their post :zerotwo_shrug:

your mental health will thank you :bear_love:

Are you getting notifications from a thread that you don't care about? Do you want to stop those notifications?

You can do this by using Mastodon's "Mute conversation" feature:

1. Log in through your server’s website or web app
2. Go to a notification you’ve received from the thread you want to mute
3. Click ⋯ on the notification and select "Mute conversation"

No one will know you've done it, and it will only affect notifications from that thread.
