I used to listen to a lot of podcasts, but lately I haven't been having the attention span for it.

Therefore, I hadn't really tried out Alex Goldman's new(ish) podcast: Hyperfixed. I'd listened to one episode, but because of the lack of focus, I didn't listen to much more.

Decided to try again this weekend with the latest episode: Little By Little.

It was fab. This episode had exactly all the ingredients that my brain needed to give it its full attention. Music, mystery, tech, history, science, typography. Glorious.

I'm having some typography fun on my site:

I'm using the CSS :before pseudo-element to put a chunky dark magenta opening quote before <blockquote>s.

For the <blockquote> styling, I currently have the quote marks for :before absolutely positioned, with the <blockquote> explicitly set to relative

If people have a better suggestion to get the layout I'm using without any absolute positioning, I would love to know!

I also switched from a bit font for headings/Open Sans for body to just Libre Franklin — turns out I love grotesques!

Part of the post-apocalyptic fantasy setting I'm writing involves a group of academics who use a single phonetic writing system to transcribe any language. This took me down a rabbit hole of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) unicode and FontForge.

The setting isn't done, but I’m releasing the phonetic fantasy font I built, and its sources. I thought others might want to join the fun. Let me know if you create your own #arcphon fonts:

Since the late 80s, the typeface foundry Emigre Fonts has been publishing a series of specimen books. They were intended as promotionals. But they turned out to be inspirational eye candy for designers.

@letterformarchive compiled forty of them in the book “Emigre Fonts: Type Specimens, 1986–2024.”

It’s nostalgia gold for old-school designers. Something new for the young pups. I could stare at this for hours.

Just thinking about this has made me feel all nostalgic about #Letraset. I created many DIY documents with Letraset back in the day, but they were all consigned to the dustbin long ago.

Letraset gave me my first introduction to #fonts and #typeography. I remember standing in the stationer's looking at all the different fonts on offer and carefully deciding which ones I would spend my pocket money on.
