Latest addition to my #TrueNAS box: #freshRSS

It took a little fiddling; I had to create and specify directories for data, database, and extensions prior to installation, but then it worked properly. Going through my preferred news sources and seeing how much I can get out of my email inbox and into my web-based #RSS reader instead.

Reporting back on #FreshRSS and #Pikapods as a #RSS solution:

Super easy setup! Have had absolutely no issues so far.

Made a second login for my wife. We're both reading on mobile apps (Readrops for Android for me, Readkit for iOS for her), Everything seems to be cool.

Might take a bit of work to get everything sync-ing just right between the mobile and the webapp.

Made a few notes here, will add more later as I continue playing:

Anyone use #FreshRSS hosted through #Pikapods ?

Need to find a better #RSS solution, something that will play nice with both desktop and mobile. Already have a Pikapods account so figure this might a good option?

Edit: will happily take suggestions for RSS solutions that are linux/android compatible and can sync across the two.

Using #RSS, #FreshRSS is regularly amazing. I am already subscribed to 717 sources, mostly to individuals who regularly write interesting and digestible stuff. I can't read every blog, even of people I admire, so I am ultra picky, and subscribe only if the writing is amazing. And I keep seeing new amazing blogs and thinking "how could it be I never came across it"? The bonus is, people who write amazingly, they too read amazing stuff and give links to it. Today's find: blog of @mattgodbolt

A recent update on my #Android phone messed up my PWA apps, including #freshrss and #Mastodon. The top status/ notification bar was overlapping the PWA, making what was underneath unaccessible and partially blocked.

I had to go into Settings - Display - Camera cutout - Your PWA App browser or program - Show camera cutout and changed the default 'auto' to 'hide camera cutout.'

If anyone comes across that, give that a try #mastoadmin. At first I thought it had to do with Mastodon's PWA but then it started happening with freshrss so I ruled out Mastodon

Using #FreshRSS as your feed reader? You can make it look modern and lovely.

1. In the settings menu, go to "User extensions" and turn on User CSS.
2. In the settings menu for *that*, add the following in "Additional CSS rules"...

html, body{font-family:system-ui !important;}

3. Profit.

(system-ui is your system's standard font-face, which is typically built to look really good on your machine. And, unlike the default font used by FreshRSS out of the box, it actually has *real* bold and italics.)

@benbrown I've relied on RSS for so many years. I love hosting my #FreshRSS instance. I've been doing it for over a year now and comfortable enough to disable my "TheOldReader" subscription, which I have had since I can't remember. I just remember all the greader shutdown swearing...

In the past I shared an Android RSS reader that impressed me with the depth of customization available. It however did not have great support for FreshRSS.

Enter Capy Reader, which I've switched to a few months ago and has been working great with FreshRSS. Also, the icon is a capybara, which is such a killer feature.
