"GNSS under attack: Recognizing and mitigating jamming and spoofing threats" by GPS World - As costs come down on GPS signal jamming and spoofing techniques, it no longer requires nation-state resources for doing it any more. As attacks become more common, defenses such as signal filters for countermeasures increase too. Self-driving cars and farm machinery may adopt RAIM already in use in aircraft. gpsworld.com/gnss-under-attack #GNSS #GPS #Galileo #jamming #spoofing #tech #aviation

Well it turns out we have 3 open positions that I should tell you about:
- #Assimilation of #GNSS-R to improve the land surface (in the same team as me)
- Assimilation of #CIMR in the coupled system looking at the ocean (we've already started preparing for the sea ice part; on the #ESA #DANTEX project I'm involved in)
- A climate reanalysis scientist looking after the quality of #ERA6

I have someone asking me to help with a PolaRx5 #GNSS that can only send observations (via satellite) using FTP (!). No one here at #UVic wants to set up an #FTP server. I don't want to. It would be attacked relentlessly.

Apparently the device can be polled from here over ssh: it's not going to have static IP. The user is going to use #Starlink (not my choice). Does dynamic DNS work with that service?

Battery power at the site limits options quite a bit as well.

Suggestions? Ideas?

Yes, Virginia, there are #GPS signals on the #moon. After Firefly Aerospace's #BlueGhost landed on the moon's surface earlier this week, the on-board #LuGRE project demonstrated that GPS signals from earth's man-made satellites could also be used for localization on the moon. Sets the record for highest altitude #GNSS signal acquisition!

My newest topic I am trying to understand better: #GNSS

While trying to write about #NTP as well as #PTP another world opened up as well. Global Navigation Satellite System or #GNSS which is most often the source of time. Digging through the different Satellite constellations #GPS , #GALILEO , #BAIDU , #GLONASS and understanding the differences was interesting.

I am still digging deeper. Anyone with knowledge, is highly welcome to educate me. ☺️👍

@metacurity : which is a bigger problem the closer you are to the poles of the earth (I once wrote a GPS tracking program that made images similar to the one shown below, which I copied from activityworkshop.net/gps/satel).

Furthermore, GPS-jamming and/or spoofing is not limited to navigation. A lot of time critical systems use it to have their clocks set to the correct time (often to keep them in sync with equipment located elswhere). This includes some types of radio transmitters.

Ah now: If it was just some random researcher somewhere who had worked out some way of exfiltrating all that raw #GNSS data from million of mobile phones, and then gone ahead with it without any meaningful #consent process, would still you be so keen to focus only on the #science?

This study took sensor data that you would not expect to ever leave your phone, assuming you even knew it existed. And Is there other sensor data that is also be being routinely taken?

@zl2tod @sapiens

It seem unlikely to me that millions of ordinary users that they would have expected that raw #GNSS data (as require to compute TEC) was routinely to be extracted from their devices by google, especially since that raw data was not needed by google to perform the position tracking most users will see as the sole function of #GNSS.

It was surprisingly easy to implement a stratum 1 #NTP server on an #esp32 module (using a #GNSS chip as satellite time reference).

I kindof expected low-level network time protocol hacking to be a bit hairy, but it's mostly (you probably guessed it) about sending a couple of high resolution time stamps back and forth...

Don't really know if I got it all the details exactly right, but never the less, the time synchronization appears to be spot on.

Implementation: github.com/espena/broadcast-cl

It's part of my #DIY clock project, where I built a personal master clock, now being my LAN time reference as well.

Interesting paper from 2018 quantifying the impact of #solarflares on #GNSS systems.

The 🇨🇳 BeiDou system was outperforming 🇪🇺 Galileo and 🇺🇸GPS during solar flare conditions due to more frequently updated broadcast ionospheric models.

I know Galileo/EGNOS did a recent system upgrade to provide increased resilience against solar peak activity, anticipating Solar Cycle 25, but not sure what those consisted of. Maybe @bert_hubert would know?
