#California #Governor #GavinNewsom just formally asked #PeteHegseth, the #defense Secy, to rescind #Trump’s #unlawful order to deploy the #NationalGuard in #LosAngeles. “We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved,” Newsom said in a social media post. “This is a serious breach of #state #sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed.”

Trump’s decision to deploy #troops came in direct opposition to the wishes of Gov #GavinNewsom & #LA Mayor #KarenBass, both #Democrats, who said that local authorities have it under control.

There has been significant mischaracterization of what #Trump has authorized in the memo signed yesterday. #Governor #GavinNewsom has criticized, for example, a complete takeover of the #California Guard. This is not provided for in the memo. Here is what the memo does provide.

Gavin Newsom is trying to bring back asset testing for disabled people receiving assistance.

A cruel and eugenics based practice and makes it even harder for us to survive.

As per the LA Times:

“Millions of Californians who rely on Medi-Cal & In-Home Supportive Services could lose eligibility under a proposal requiring recipients to prove their assets total less than $2,000”

This is forcing disabled people (further) into legislated poverty.

California governor, #GavinNewsom is the quintessential example of the fucked up strategy that lost the election for the democrats.

We saw enormous crowds show up for Bernie and #AOC and online the vocal girl-crushes on Rep Jasmine Crockett. Hell people are still stanning for Elizabeth Warren.

Dems need to stop with this bullshit idea of trying to cater to moderates and right of center never Trumpers.

If you've been reading my analysis for a while, you probably don't need to be told that I do not like California Governor Gavin Newsom very much. Despite representing essentially a one party state, Newsom, a Democrat (I guess) has consistently worked to normalize fascist ideology, and adopt reactionary NIMBY-infused authoritarian policy in a state, California, where there is almost no political pressure to do so whatsoever. At the end of the day, Gavin is a fascist collaborator who doesn't give a fuck if poor people live or die so long as his corporate donors are happy, and that is significantly worse than merely being a transactional neoliberal who loves PAC money; which is how Newsom's defenders typically portray him in political discourse. From inviting nazi propagandists like Charlie Kirk on his podcast to spread transphobic propaganda, to turning his back on police reform in California to protect violent murderpigs who violate civil rights in his home state, Newsome has been openly willing to help fascists, do fascism, if he thinks it's politically advantageous for his career. Now, with his term as Governor running out, Newsom has set his eyes on the 2028 US presidential nomination, and I've gone on record in saying that such an outcome would be an absolute disaster for folks who don't like fascism; because win or lose, the result of a Newsom nomination would ultimately be "more fascism."

Naturally, that position will sound quite hyperbolic to many rank and file Democrats who "vote blue no matter who" but I'd argue that all the evidence you need to see Newsom's fascist intentions can be found in studying his policies towards unhoused people in California. After all, Newsom vigorously supported our 6-3 fascist high Supreme Court's nightmarish "City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson" ruling which effectively criminalizes being unhoused, and spent the lead up to the 2024 US election threatening California municipalities with being defunded unless they participated in fascist, anti-humanitarian "homeless sweeps" that destroy lives and address precisely zero aspects of the affordable housing crisis in California; does weaponizing municipal funding to force local governments to adopt fascist policing policies that harm their constitutions sound familiar to you? It should, it's a big part of how Donald Trump himself is currently trying to force Democrat-led cities to cooperate with his illegal mass deportation agenda. As I wrote way back in August, don't cry at me about "hyperbolic language" because fascist is as fascist does, and Gavin Newsom loves doing fascism to target unhoused people.

Furthermore, nothing about Newsom's preference for cruel, ineffective, and authoritarian solutions to the housing crisis has changed since the election of Dowmarket Mussolini; as this Truthout article indicates, Newsome is now trying to bribe municipalities with money originally earmarked for social and mental health assistance for the unhoused community, to conduct fascist "homeless encampment sweeps" that will help precisely nobody, and make the lives of one of the most vulnerable constituencies in California, the unhoused, immeasurably worse.

Newsom’s Model Ordinance Pushes Homeless Sweeps Across California

"California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is urging cities and counties to adopt a newly released model ordinance aimed at banning and clearing homeless encampments.

The proposal would prohibit unhoused people from repeatedly camping in the same location, restrict encampments that block pedestrian access on sidewalks, and require authorities to provide notice and make a good-faith effort to offer shelter before destroying camps. According to the governor’s office, the model ordinance builds on an approach already used by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), which has destroyed more than 16,000 encampments since 2021.

Framing the move as an act of “compassion and care,” Newsom’s administration announced that $3.3 billion in voter-approved Proposition 1 funds — originally intended to expand behavioral health housing and treatment — would be made available statewide to incentivize cities and counties to adopt the ordinance."

Folks, I don't know how to say this any clearer but Gavin Newsom doesn't think unhoused people are human beings, and is willing to adopt cruel, fascist policies targeting unhoused people to make them "go away." Where? That's unclear; after all and as the article makes clear, Newsom is only making the barest of pretenses at solving the actual root of the crisis, a lack of affordable housing in the state; this isn't about finding a place for unhoused people to "go." If this is how Newsom is prepared to treat some of the most vulnerable people he was elected to help, who else might he be willing to sacrifice on the altar of the business lobby and "cleaning up our streets?"

Your Next President?

Here is California's "radical lunatic" Governor Gavin Newsom, on his podcast, bragging to fascist conspiracy theorist Charlie Kirk, that “We do work with ICE. … We coordinate with ICE on the deportation, we’ve done that over 10,000 times since I’ve been governor, we’re not denying access, we’re not denying coordination.” This, despite his earlier pledge that California would be a “sanctuary to all who seek it.”

With much of Democratic Party leadership playing dead and apparently hoping Trump dies from embarrassment after reading his polling numbers, there hasn't been a lot of political opposition to Trump's fascist regime to talk about. One noted exception however, has been Maine Governor Janet Mills and her refusal to cave to Trump's anti-trans pogrom on behalf of transgender athletes in the state's school system. Some of you may remember Mills from her contentious encounter with Downmarket Mussolini in the White House were the president threatened federal funding for Maine and tried to intimidate the Governor into enforcing his (unconstitutional) anti-trans executive order. Mills famously responded "I'll see you in court" and now she has; winning a decision to block the Trump administration's attempts to withhold federal funds for school lunches in the state unless Mills agrees to discriminate against trans kids.

For more details about this story, I'd like to share this fourteen minute video by Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report. I picked this admittedly broad discussion because Mike does an excellent job of putting the Trump regime's actions in the proper context of authoritarianism and anti-trans discrimination, while effectively contrasting the activities to resist Trump in the Democratic Party, against the collaborators and surrender muppets who're consistently advising the Party to abandon vulnerable marginalized groups at the precise moment a fascist regime comes for those people.

One segment that really stood out to me is when Figueredo explained that estimates indicated there are as few as two transgender athletes playing high school sports in the entire state of Maine. This of course highlights the unfathomable malevolence of the Trump regime towards trans people, in that they would threaten a school lunch program that serves 170,000 students in the state among other threatened funding cuts, just to discriminate against two trans people; the fact that Mills is willing to fight for the human rights of two people in her entire state when the stakes are this high demonstrates her ability to rise to the moment in the fascist Trump 2.0 era. By contrast however, when Mike asks if anyone believes a guy like Gavin Newsom would make the same choice, I think anyone who is paying attention can agree the answer is no. By contrasting Mills' active resistance to Trump's ongoing war against her state, with the appeasement and collaboration agenda proposed by folks like Newsom, Rahm Emanuel, and Elissa Slotkin, Figueredo also illuminates the likely reason that the public doesn't feel like Democrats are doing enough to resist the Trump agenda, and the Party remains mired in terrible polling even as the Trump regime also craters in popularity.

It's a broad, electoral politics-focused discussion, and I don't want to blow sunshine up your butt about a single court ruling. But if we're going to rip the liberal establishment for collaborating with fascism, it makes sense to talk about what a realistic opposition to Trump's fascist agenda might look like. Nobody is throwing a ticker tape parade here, but a Democratic Party lead by folks like Mills, Van Hollen, Pritzker, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders all resisting the Trump regime is an asset to folks who don't like fascism; while one that insists on embracing Trump's fascist agenda and throwing marginalized people to the wolves, is not. It would be nice if for once, The Democratic Party's leadership class made the right choice.

Trump Faces Humiliating Defeat to Democratic Governor He Threatened

"Trump publicly attacked Maine’s governor, Janet Mills, back in February after she refused to comply with his discriminatory trans sports ban in schools. She told Trump, “I’ll see you in court,” and he retorted by saying it would be an “easy” win against her. The Trump Administration subsequently launched a probe into her state, and Trump himself demanded an apology from Mills on Truth Social. She never backed down and just had a major victory against the Trump administration in court."

#Trump is all over the place as usual. He has insulted #Biden, went on a long tangent about #Obama’s presidential library in Chicago, brought up California Governor #GavinNewsom repeatedly calling him “Newscum” — something he loves to do.

Trump refused to say how he knew the #Houthis were backing down. “They’ve said, ‘Please don’t bomb us anymore,’” then added that it didn’t “matter” where he heard the information but that it came from a “very good source.”
