On this day in history
1479 BC Thutmose III (sometimes called Thutmose the Great - regarded as one of the greatest warriors, military commanders, and military strategists of all time) ascends to the throne of Egypt
1184 BC The Greeks enter Troy using the Trojan Horse in funniest invasion in history
1792 French army officer Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle composed La Marseillaise; still one of the best national anthems (a total banger)
Also in 1792 the first guillotine was erected, on the Place de Grève in Paris
1898 Spanish-American War: Spain declares war on the United States
The Catholic saint of the day is a lawyer who grew disgusted with corruption and injustice and jacked it all in to help the poor, having his wealth distributed among the needy. Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, known as 'the poor man's lawyer'. While he was preaching against the Protestants in Switzerland, where he'd gone against explicit advice, a gun was fired at him, but he escaped unharmed. A Protestant offered to shelter Fidelis, but he declined, saying his life was in God’s hands. On the road back, he was immediately set upon by a group of armed men and killed.
