Launceston St Mary, Cornwall
Built 1511-24, wholly of granite, the hardest of stones. Exterior almost entirely decorated with carvings. This is probably the best example of how beautifully carved granite can be.
A Granite ball - likely dropped here by glaciers at the end of the last iceage over 15,000 years ago and shaped by Atlantic waves since then.
County Clare, Ireland.

The Chikanishing Trail, Killarney Provincial Park Ontario Canada was a rough, rugged trail over rocky terrain and the odd rickety, weathered wooden bridge or boardwalk. The fall foliage was stunning especially with the pink granite. Click link to view for #FreeShipping North America on #wallart

Granite galore in this Dartmoor church, including this delightful small door with round-headed arch, simple roll moulding and decorated spandrels with date 1705. Absolutely splendid.

And as I am experimenting with local AI and run one of the #Granite models on my laptop, I asked it about the difference between Mastodon and Bluesky. Well:
"The main difference between Mastodon and Bluesky is that Mastodon is a decentralized platform with local instances, while Bluesky is a centralized platform with a single, global network."

Check out this @redmonk Quick Take video I recorded with @sogrady at last week's #Ibmforum2024. Enjoyed hearing more about IBM's strategies around #AI, #granite, and @ibmwatsonx at their new flagship office at One Madison Avenue, NYC.
Another sunny day in Mull . After meeting 2 nice lots of geologists from Leicester + Innsbruck Universities at Ardalanish this morning, headed off for picnic lunch at the enigmatically-named Eilean an t-Santachaidh (island of covetousness/desire) which is not actually an island, but hard to reach by land. Note the two intrepid sheep taking advantage of low tide to nibble seaweed. Geo info in Alt text. #Mull #Granite #Basalt #Sheep
Today some #geology from my #hedgewatch on the #Seychelles. There most #rocks belong to the #granite's & exist of #quartz, #feldspar (FSP), & #mica. Granites aren't happy in warm & humid #climate's because the FSP weathers very fast away. This is a supaw exciting example with only the quartz grains being left
Today is #InternationalRockDay. A impawtent day in my place. Fig1 #granite boulders on the #Seychelles. Fig2 young #basalt #lava on #Iceland, Fig3 #rocks in circles on #Svalbard & Fig4 the making of rocks by a #volcano. Pictures taken during #hedgewatch

El Capitan
El Capitan is one of the first landmarks that you will see as you drive into Yosemite Valley. This granite wall rises 3,000 feet off of the valley floor and is truly a sight to see. From the valley floor El Capitan is visible as you enter into the park and is prominently displayed to see from most points in the valley.

Why do Olympic curling stones cost so much? A trip to Ailsa Craig with Kays of Scotland, who have the only licence to cut the rock, quarrying the granite, and then transporting it to Newton Stewart for working into Curling Stones
@Anthro I found the source, Anthro! The Wilderness Suite granite: a part of the metamorphic gneiss posted by @AZGeology on Twitter: “Metamorphic #gneiss exposed just uphill from mile marker 5 along the Catalina Highway, Santa Catalina Mtns., Tucson, AZ. The parent rocks include the 1.4 billion-year-old blackish Oracle granite and the 50-million-year-old white Wilderness Suite #granite.”
We were blocked from going up the mountain as the road was closed by ice roads.
A bright orange piece of granitic rock - I've never found a bit with this colour before. Likely dragged down to County Clare from Galway by glaciers during the last ice age.
Is there a specific name for this kind of rock? @drsadhbh
