Wakes up from post-renaturing siesta before 11pm.
Came home with a clump of yarrow liberated by our 'weeding' at the base of the bee mound. It''s destined for a small patch of semi-arid substrate recently created in between some of the pre-cast concrete sections scattered at the back of the #allotment.

The cubs were spotted & photographed without their mother. #CougarCubs are highly dependent on their mothers, often staying with them for the first two years of life.

🌿 I want ecosystems to be our priority. I want vast areas of grassland & forests to be reclaimed for indigenous species here in Southern Alberta. New research from @UMich shows that large #conservation areas are more effective than small ones at preserving species & #ecosystems. Scaling up habitat protection helps maintain genetic diversity & #climate resilience. As #habitat loss accelerates, expanding protected areas is key to safeguarding #nature.

The fact that this hawk was perched in a eucalyptus tree is interesting, since these trees are not native to California but have become a common sight throughout the state. In fact, some people have raised concerns about the impact of eucalyptus trees on local ecosystems, since they can crowd out native plants and animals. But it seems like this particular hawk has found a way to make the most of it!

Recently Hill Wood Pasture has been identified as an important historic farmed habitat. In the Cheviots there would have been Juniper on the higher ground, then Ash/Birch lower down and finally Alder in the valley floor. Here's one of the few surviving Northumbrian examples, some Juniper on the hill and Alder in the valley floor. Cattle would've grazed the pasture around these trees, protected from the worst of the weather.
