But the most important thing: owning your own data.</p>
Courtney Rosenthal<p>It seems like a terrible choice on <a href="https://pdx.social/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> that when you create your own dashboard and select it as the default, the system-managed "Overview" dashboard disappears from the sidebar. I feel like I'm missing something about this behavior.</p><p>I didn't want to "disappear" it. I just wanted to make my dashboard the default.</p><p>Can anybody explain this behavior?</p>
Florian Haas<p>If I wanted to integrate some ground humidity sensors and a drip <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/irrigation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>irrigation</span></a> system (plus precipitation forecast data) into <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> for my vegetable garden, which irrigation computer would I buy? Yardian? Rain Bird? Something else? </p><p>(Must use a Local Polling or Local Push integration. Boosts and comments appreciated.)</p>
Evan<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@reillypascal" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>reillypascal</span></a></span> ooo this is awesome! </p><p>I used to have a feed in my <a href="https://social.lol/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> setup for the latest plane flying over my house, but that data feed eventually died. </p><p>Now I'm going to have to figure out how to pipe this info in to the right dashboard</p>
Jorge<p>Added the Wiz Downlights (which run over WiFi/Matter) and some other WiFi IoT devices I'm interested to know when they stop responding to pings.</p><p>The group has an alert enabled. For now it just notifies my phone via <a href="https://pug.ninja/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a>, but at least I'll know if something is amiss.</p>
Jorge<p>I've been having intermittent issues with some WiFi IoT devices losing IP connectivity despite being connected to the IoT SSID. Reconnecting them in UniFi fixes the problem, but I only know of an issue when <a href="https://pug.ninja/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> fails to turn them off (or on).</p><p>I need a way to monitor this and trigger a reconnect ahead of time. I can probably do this by checking the availability state in HA with an automation, but I could also add these devices to Uptime Kuma and trigger a specific notification to HA which then tells UniFi to reconnect the device.</p>
McNeely<p>About to take the plunge and get <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> set up for our house. It's there a drop dead simple recommendation for smart plugs that people use?</p>
Dan 🏳️‍🌈🇦🇺☁️<p>Apart from the "you left the fridge door open, stupid!" and "washing's done" reminders, one of my best quality of life hacks with <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/homeassistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeassistant</span></a> is this popup on the tablet by the front door that runs between 7 and 8am on workdays. We have a bus stop across the street from us, and this uses the PTV API so we're never late for it.</p>
Flaki<p>Fun fact I just learned: turning my coffee machine on, letting it heat up (it's a medium-fancy heat-exchanger machine, so it has a boiler to heat up before it can brew) and brewing a single latte uses more electricity than cooking 4l of doggy broth for over an hour in my multi-cooker :pikawow:</p><p><a href="https://flaki.social/tags/flakibrews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flakibrews</span></a> <a href="https://flaki.social/tags/homeassistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeassistant</span></a></p>
Paul Fisher<p>Another random <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> question...</p><p>If you use Areas and Floors, where do stairs go?</p><p>Do they go downstairs, as that's where they start?</p><p>Do they go upstairs, as that's what they're there for (to go upstairs)?</p><p>Or do they sit, unloved, as an "Unassigned Area" never to be given a true place in our homes?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ConfusedOfSwindon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ConfusedOfSwindon</span></a></p>
Rook 🏳️‍⚧️<p>So I thought switching to the <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> ZBT-1 would improve the reliability of my ZigBee network, over the ConBee 1... I was mistaken...</p><p>(Yes, it's on an extension USB cable, away from other high interference sources)</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/homeassistant" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>homeassistant</span></a></span></p>
Borys Pierov<p>Now that I could just plug the board into a random USB power adapter, and the LED strip into the board, the only remaining piece was software. Since I was relying on <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ESPHome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ESPHome</span></a>, it was just a matter of setting up my <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> as a time-source and wiring a loop to switch LEDs every second. The only tricky part was translating indices to take into account LED strip being a single continuous sequence of lights arranged in a zigzag manner. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/IndicesOfTime" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IndicesOfTime</span></a></p>
Paradroyd<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@iFixit" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>iFixit</span></a></span> Yep..just pulled my Nest out about 20 minutes ago (I was planning on doing it before they made this announcement anyway). <br>I replaced it with a Honeywell T6 Pro Z-wave. - Totally programmable via home assistant, without having to ask Google's permission!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/homeassistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeassistant</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/nest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nest</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/honeywell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>honeywell</span></a></p>
Courtney Rosenthal<p>Looks like there is a <a href="https://pdx.social/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> Community Day planned for <a href="https://pdx.social/tags/Portland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Portland</span></a>. I'm a thinking 'bout going.</p><p><a href="https://lu.ma/70zmhnw8" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">lu.ma/70zmhnw8</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Courtney Rosenthal<p>I got a new smart thermostat, a Venstar ColorTouch (first photo). The reason I did so, instead of the usual Ecobee or Nest, is the local API (second photo).</p><p>That means I can control the thermostat directly, without using the cloud.</p><p><a href="https://venstar.com/thermostats/colortouch/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">venstar.com/thermostats/colort</span><span class="invisible">ouch/</span></a></p><p>It is a feature step-down from my previous Ecobee. For instance, I miss the ability to do limited time overrides. But I think it's an alright tradeoff. The integration into Home Assistant was a snap.</p><p><a href="https://pdx.social/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> <a href="https://pdx.social/tags/homeAutomation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAutomation</span></a></p>
Dan 🏳️‍🌈🇦🇺☁️<p>May 9th and <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/homeassistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeassistant</span></a> is still on 2025.5.0. That's some impressive stability. They're usually onto the first or second patch of the month after a week. Dare I try it, for the improved template UI in automations?</p>
Retrograde<p>Point update to <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> and afterwards none of the push-buttons work, regardless of model.</p><p>Turns out they all now have a _CLIENT suffix on their unique ID.</p><p>Cool, cool. 🤪</p>

NAB 🇬🇧🇪🇺🔶:marmite:<p>Interesting that I am occasionally told to use <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/homeassistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeassistant</span></a> rather than <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/nodered" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nodered</span></a>, but I honestly wouldn't have a clue where to even start programming this flow, for example, (just for our central heating and hot water) into HA - or even if it's possible.</p>
