Yes, The Book of PF, 4th Edition Is Coming Soon nxdomain.no/~peter/yes_the_boo

Long rumored and eagerly anticipated by some, the fourth edition of The Book of PF is now available for preorder nostarch.com/book-of-pf-4th-ed #openbsd #pf #packetfilter #freebsd #networking #security #tcpip #ipv6 #ipv4 #bookofpf

... and of course somebody had to ask, "when can we expect a fifth edition", to which the answer was "let's get this one out the door first"

That said, watch this space for further announcements!

Seriously people, if you're ipv6 enabled its only a matter of months before more than half your global traffic will be #ipv6. Stop writing software and documentation that assumes IP addresses are #ipv4 only.

People are stuck in 2010 because they're just not paying attention and shit is happening fast.

"Participants in the interviews conducted by NEXOP
said they believed that IPv4 will remain the primary
protocol for Internet connectivity for the next
decade or two. This prevailing sentiment highlights
the perceived necessity of IPv4 for most Internet
users in the foreseeable future. Many operators
also thought that the complexity of deploying IPv6
in large networks was underestimated."

🤦

I think i just made the first timid steps on understanding some core concepts behind #ipv6 that i always struggled to understand.
I just started to think about it like a more sane version of #IPX than a totally insane version of #ipv4 and suddenly things start to make sense...

Of course that doesn't help anyone who never used IPX, but it is a great help for me. To be honest I am still scared of IPV6 because #NAT feels like a security feature if all your FW-Rules look at ip headers anyway.

Why? #IPv6 is the regular internet, so it only makes sense to use that for talking to localhost. #IPv4 is just a legacy network which will be around for a few years to remain, but it is no longer the primary Layer 3 protocol.

@jwo

Question to the network people out there:

Are there any ISPs that are IPv6 only (without providing a NAT/whatever)?

Background: Having an argument with a provider that hasn't published any AAAA records, and whilst I think that's poor form, I'm wondering if this would actually negatively affect any actual users in practice?
