Happy New Year everyone! 🥳

According to the 12-year cycle of zodiacal animals, 2025 is the “Year of the Snake”. My #Tokyo home ward, #Itabashi, sent a New Year’s Greeting this morning with Itabashi’s mascot and some snake buddies. The main phrase reads “kinga shinnen” (a formal way of saying “Happy New Year”).

At the turn of years, many businesses have some sort of display of the coming year’s zodiac animal. Here is an example of a nice snake that I found a few days ago in the Ochanomizu area of Tokyo.

Kūkai, who played a crucial role in the development of the Japanese writing system, is generally a prominent figure in Japanese Buddhism. He is the founder of the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism, which is one of the major schools of Japanese Buddhism. He is also prominent as a calligrapher, poet, and scholar. It is also said, that he never died but rather meditating in the mausoleum on Mount Kōya (高野山, Kōya-san), a large temple settlement in Wakayama Prefecture.
