Edit - @SylviaFysica found the style is called anamorphoses!

I'm hoping in the wide fediverse someone can help.

Back in the 1970s my family had an illusion jigsaw puzzle that looked like abstract flowy colour blobs, when you finished, you rolled a piece of reflective material into a tube and placed it into the center and you could see the image! A large group of people in a historical setting.

Does that sound familiar to anyone?

"Right Hand of the Girl with Carnation," Wilhelm Leibl, 1880.

Leibl (1844-1900) was a German Realist painter of portraits and scenes of peasant life. He was noted for not doing any preliminary drawing, but simply wading in with his paints, which could create problems...of which this canvas is a result.

This is actually a section of a larger painting, "Girl with Carnation," but as Leibl was so intense in painting in as much meticulous detail as possible without preliminary drawing, he ended up throwing off his proportions and he could lose track of the dimensional relationships. The finished work, basically, had too many focal points and fell apart. So, in a act of artistic integrity, he cut up the canvas, with the girl's left hand, head, and a section of the bodice still surviving.

A good example of the whole being less than the sum of its parts, eh? It works well on its own, though.

Happy Flower Friday!

As promised - #3Dprinting enthusiasts and #woodworking people of all ages - here is my handy little blade holder for your #jigsaw (if you own a #DeWalt).

I realized that it's a hassle to find a mounting screw for the thing if you don't have one handy from the cutting fence attachment, so I added a little pop-in split pin that seems to work very well and only looks slightly penis-like (not intentional - form follows function, what can I say).

I send thanks to the buyer from New York who purchased a jigsaw puzzle of

Tea by the Sea -- 2-steve-henderson.pixels.com/f

May the process of putting together the pieces -- all 1000 of them -- be a joy and a challenge, and may the image bring to you a sense of calmness and tranquility. That's how I feel about drinking tea, and being by the sea.

My latest jigsaw: A tourist map from 1946. A very colonial of view of New Zealand back then, emphasising the many hunting and fishing options available, as well as ties to Britain. Taranaki is described as being "reminiscent of Cornwall and Devon". Naturally there isn't a macron in sight on any Māori place names. A fascinating map with lots of detail which is hard to see on this image. As always, the sea was the hardest part with the 'brute force' being the only real option.

Christmas traditions:

The Boxing Day Cold War Steve jigsaw.

If you don't know 'Steve', he's one of the best, most eviscerating satirists on the internet. Whilst he's unashamedly left wing, there are no holy cows and he's as likely (more likely) to tear Starmer apart as any number of Gammons. The jigsaw is an established part of our Christmas and we don't acknowledge the outside world whilst working on it. Meals get skipped.

The jigsaw usually takes three days and an uncertain amount of emotional toll on our relationships. It has begun.
