Ohhhh . . . yesterday I paddled what I'm pretty sure is my new boat. Made by Melker of Sweden, committed to sustainability in manufacture (it ain't easy), this baby is laid up with cork; the deck is made of flax. Yes, cork and flax. And resin that's at least partly plant-based. And it paddles like a dream.

I suppose it's time for an introduction post. My name is Patrick, and I live in Seattle. I am an avid kayaker--teaching kayaking is also what I do for work.
Looking at my posts on the old instance, it seems I post mostly about kayaking, cooking, flowers, beer, and occasionally my children.
Paddled from the Portage Lake DNR launch up the Portage River, aka Portage Creek aka Hell Creek, in a totally inappropriate sea kayak. Had to portage a beaver dam but turned back at a property-owner's bridge upstream from Toma Rd rather than trespass on his yard. Highlights included skunk cabbage, dogwood and a water snake. This was the route from Lake Erie's Huron River watershed across #Michigan to Lake Michigan's Grand River watershed.

So the #kayaking race on Saturday was great!
It was a "fun slalom": A very easy course, all boat types permitted. If you went fast, great; but the main thing was just participating.
It was so exciting for the 12yo! She was super nervous, but raced anyway. I made sure to start just before her, so she could follow my line (not sure I was a great example...).
She made it to the finish line, and now she's SO PROUD
Apparently I’ve signed up for a #kayaking race tomorrow??!
The 12yo had her first #whitewater #kayak run today!
All went well, no swims, she had a great time. Tomorrow, we’ll try something a little more challenging. Today was a really good start!
Specifically:
1. Four-day kayaking camp together with two kids, one of them a beginner
2. Pick up my new midlife crisis bike, and ride it home for a couple hundred km
3. A two-weekend training for leading kayaking excursions, with ample practical elements
all this followed by a one-week #kayaking course in June :-)
For Ottawa peeps, the Outdoor and Adventure Travel show is this weekend (April 26-27) at the Nepean Sportsplex:

First day of #whitewater #kayaking in 2025 done!
Lovely weather. Not a lot of water, but enough - and we did a stretch that’s challenging for me, but which became a little easier at this water level.
Tired and happy
