Charlotte Aten<p>I've decided to drop <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Canvas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Canvas</span></a> and just use a static website for my course this fall. I'm still using <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Gradescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gradescope</span></a> for grading since I haven't found a drop-in <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/FOSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FOSS</span></a> replacement yet and the fall semester starts soon.</p><p>I was also wishing for a self-hosted learning management system in a previous post. I didn't know about <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Moodle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Moodle</span></a>. We used <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Blackboard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Blackboard</span></a> when I was in college. Since this might be my last year at this postdoc, I don't want to change too much, but I'm definitely going to consider it in future years. It looks like Moodle does have some kind of homework grading functionality, so maybe that should replace Gradescope. When I looked at the Canvas version of this feature before, it was terrible, so I'm not sure how much I can hope for with Moodle.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/SelfHosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosted</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/LMS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LMS</span></a></p>

A single <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/DataCenter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataCenter</span></a> can consume the equivalent electricity of 50,000 homes. At 200 terawatt hours (TWh) annually, data centers collectively devour more energy than some nation-states. Today, the electricity utilized by data centers accounts for 0.3 percent of overall <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CarbonEmissions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CarbonEmissions</span></a>, and if we extend our accounting to include networked devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets, the total shifts to 2 percent of global carbon emissions.</p><p>"Why so much energy? Beyond cooling, the energy requirements of data centers are vast. To meet the pledge to customers that their data and cloud services will be available anytime, anywhere, data centers are designed to be hyper-redundant: If one system fails, another is ready to take its place at a moment’s notice, to prevent a disruption in user experiences. Like Tom’s air conditioners idling in a low-power state, ready to rev up when things get too hot, the data center is a Russian doll of redundancies: redundant power systems like diesel generators, redundant servers ready to take over computational processes should others become unexpectedly unavailable, and so forth. In some cases, only 6 to 12 percent of energy consumed is devoted to active computational processes. The remainder is allocated to cooling and maintaining chains upon chains of redundant fail-safes to prevent costly downtime."</p><p>Read more:<br><a href="https://getpocket.com/explore/item/the-staggering-ecological-impacts-of-computation-and-the-cloud?utm_source=firefox-newtab-en-us" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">getpocket.com/explore/item/the</span><span class="invisible">-staggering-ecological-impacts-of-computation-and-the-cloud?utm_source=firefox-newtab-en-us</span></a><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NoNukesForAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NoNukesForAI</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RethinkNotRestart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RethinkNotRestart</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NoNukesForDatacenters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NoNukesForDatacenters</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LMs</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Datacenters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Datacenters</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WaterIsLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaterIsLife</span></a></p>
Different Than<p>Reason 237 I fucking hate <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/brightspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>brightspace</span></a>: they lock all conversation about their product behind a soft paywall (e.g. I get stupid emails like this where I can't just see what Yi Yan.L.782 said). Every fucking interaction has to be on their platform, under their control. Much of the content is hidden from search engines. </p><p>Of course, once you get into their little walled garden you discover that searching for unfixed bugs or unmet feature requests is only possible on a one-term-at-a-time search basis. There's almost no way to see if related issues exist.</p><p>No surprise: when I dove into this last year and spent a couple of hours trying to answer some questions about basic, industry-standard functionality (spoiler: the answer to all of them was "No"), I figured out that they have hundreds or thousands of unresolved issues going back 20 years.</p><p>This company is worth a billion dollars.</p><p>Edit: I clicked the link. If anyone else could, and needs work, hmu and I'll send the companies looking.
