#AlpineLinux 3.21: Lean, mean, and #LoongArch-ready
Alpine #Linux follows closely upon the release of a new #LTS kernel version: 6.12
Alpine 3.21 has a raft of other updates along with the kernel: updated development tools including .NET 9, and new desktops including KDE Plasma 6.2, LXQt 2.1, and GNOME 47
The version before this one, Alpine 3.20, added #RISCV back in May. Now, it gains another: the quite #MIPS-like Chinese #Loongson

#AMD #EPYC 9755 Performance On The #Linux 6.11 & 6.12 Kernel
In many of the larger, real-world workloads there were minimal to small changes while in more of the micro-benchmarks and other focused areas there were some nice gains observed with Linux 6.11/6.12. With Linux 6.12 expected to be this year's LTS kernel version, it will find use by hyperscalers and other large organizations that tend to jump between the #LTS kernel versions.

#Ubuntu 24.04.1 #LTS Is Now Available for Download, Here’s What’s New
This release introduces #ActiveDirectory integration and enables upgrades from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) systems.
The next point release, Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, is planned for February 2025. It will be a more exciting release as it will be powered by #Linux kernel 6.11 and Mesa 24.2 graphics stacks from the upcoming Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) release, due out in October 2024.

I would appreciate some advice on a #Linux #distro recommendation:
The Device: A 2012 laptop with a 3rd Gen Core i3, 4 GB of RAM, and a spinning HDD (maybe I'll upgrade in the future)
The person it's for: My mom, not very tech savvy, is using Windows 10, will need a replacement for when 10 goes EOL Oct. 2025. Has used Windows Vista, 8, and 10. Everything she does is doable within basic apps like a web browser, simple office suite, or pleasant desktop apps; Linux alternatives will work perfectly.
What the distro has to be: LTS, simple to maintain, have a workable Windows-like interface, not be Ubuntu. Needs to run smoothly on the provided specs.
Any ideas and help are appreciated. Consider boosting for more perspectives.

Because my airplane was delayed, I played with kernel CVE data, and summarized[1] the buggy and error-full results.

TL; DR: About 95% of CVEs that affect the mainline tree has fixed before those are reported by linux_kernel_cves project. The number was 76%, 69%, 73%, 78%, 83% and 82% for 6.4.y, 6.1.y, 5.15.y, 5.10.y, 5.4.y, 4.19.y, and 4.14.y, respectively.

The worst case time between linux_kernel_cves report and fix commit being fixed was [16, 32) weeks for the mainline. For the stable trees, the number was [4, 8) weeks (6.4.y), [16, 32) weeks (6.1.y and 5.15.y), [32, 64) weeks (5.10.y), [64, 128) weeks for 5.4.y, [32, 64) weeks (4.19.y and 4.14.y).
