Sylke’s home cookingOur main meal was fast today. I made Japanese rice, boiled a cut up Romanesco broccoli until it was just right to eat, created a sauce from a Chinese style chicken and broccoli dish that I hadn’t cooked in a long time, and reheated the last three lemon chicken schnitzels in the air fryer. Easy-peasy and a solid meal.<br>

It’s funny: when I go back to East Asian dishes that I used to cook before starting my Japanese food adventure, I immediately notice now that these dishes were not “original ones”, as they taste like they have been toned down to appeal to Western tastebuds and to go along with what is usually available in our kitchens. When I prepare dishes from recipes that come from websites where the food is cooked by people who are familiar with the local cuisines it usually tastes much more rounded and deeper somehow. But yes, I often still have to find special ingredients for them that are sometimes hard to get - and that despite having all kinds of special ingredients in my cupboards already! 😅 Anyway, the sauce I made had this problem, it was kind of bland, but after a few tweaks it was acceptable. I guess I’ll archive that particular recipe.<br>
