corpus search! change language/corpus to your liking

there used to be a time when you could just throw words into google as a corpus search, and see from the results how frequently they were used and in which contexts

so, I'd been bemoaning the loss of that but hadn't looked too deeply to find a replacement before, which now, I have

corpora.uni-leipzig.deLeipzig Corpora Collection - GermanCorpus-Based Monolingual Dictionary of the language German, with 36033067 sentences. More than 200 other languages available.

I’ve finished my first real book in #French: Maigret’s premier case « Pietr-le-Letton » by Georges #Simenon. Having only read short crime stories and abridged texts in French before, this one was much more complex regarding the language and also the plot. But I’ve really enjoyed it and can totally recommend #Maigret novels to other learners. Any ideas on suitable contemporary books for French learners? Maybe something romantic? #francais #language #languagelearning #crime #books #bookstodon

#langHangout Q7: Do you ever get your languages mixed up?

My answer: This one's funny. I almost never mix up languages like Spanish and Italian, although they are very similar. But somehow my brain can't distinguish between Hungarian and Turkish. They are not similar at all, but still sometimes I really have to stop and think which language a given word belongs to.

What about you?

I’m honestly enjoying it more and more all the time! I’m finding more learning resources and supports, including a language exchange group that meets twice a week in my neighborhood There are a 1/2 dozen or more Korean speakers and learners in the group so I’m beginning to make back and forth conversation.

Me during and after watching #KpopDemonHunters: well, they keep saying 혼문 but it's never translated. What could it mean? 🤔
I assume 문 is what I immediately thought it meant, effectively the same as 門 (もん) in Japanese: gate, door. So that just leaves the first syllable, 혼. Wiktionary says: soul, spirit.

So: soul/spirit gate/portal. That matches the context. Mystery solved!
