As described this a detail of my pollinator garden piece made of collaged prints, for Manufactured Ecosystems. This shot shows my tiny sweat bee, Agapostemon virescens (Toronto’s official bee), flowers (purple coneflowers, Canada goldenrod, black eyed susan, wild geranium) and a hint at the bottom of a dead log, a red-spotted purple butterfly and a little white underwing moth.

3 postcard sized lego prints: The first shows a green slug and an orange slug. They are leaning towards each other forming a loose circle shape, looking a bit like the ying yang symbol. The second is picturing a snail with a shell printed in a muted pink tone. The third shows a snail peaking out of it's rather long drawn shell. It's based on the shell of Lissachatina fulica.

Working on a new print about the future of pollination featuring wild native bees for Manufactured Ecosystems.

The future of pollination is a huge global concept to tackle artistically. There are issues worldwide, but they’re all local: specific species, stresses on ecosystems & remedies. You can proscribe a general policy like ‘restore habitat’ but you have to be clear that the best plants to help pollinators are those that evolved in a given place. 🧵

As described this is a large 16” x 20” linocut print on white paper with a deckle edge with a ring of 8 wild bees with one in the centre, printed in black ink. The bees are the two bumblebees (Bombus impatiens and B. affinis), a sweat bee (Agapostemon sericeus), two leaf cutter bees (Megachile relativa and M. brevis), two mason bees (Osmia lignaria and O. conjunta), a carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), a long-horned bee (Melissodes).

Happy birthday #entomologist & scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717)! Her stepdad Jacob Marrel & students trained her as an artist. She began painting insects & plants by 13. She wrote, “I spent my time investigating insects. [...] I realized that other caterpillars produced beautiful butterflies or moths, and that silkworms did the same. This led me to collect all the caterpillars I could find in order to see how they changed”.⁠ 🧵

Work in progress. The text is from Milton’s epic poem ‘Paradise Lost’ (book IV). It’s slow work and every so often I take rubbings to see how things are progressing. Once carved, I’ll proof it and then decide if I want to let more light into the tree. The fourth photo is flipped so that you can read the text if you zoom in.

A partially cut lino block showing a cormorant on top of a tree within which is the text ‘Thence up he flew and on the tree of life, the middle tree and highest there that grew, sat like a cormorant. Above the block is a rubbing that gives a sense of how things may look when printed in black ink.

Ontario is where I was born and where I now call home. Growing up on Lake Ontario I was always aware of our region being defined by the Great Lakes, 🧵1/2

After a few days of thinking I decided to give it another try with a different ink + following the advice I was given in the last post (spritz water on the fabric before printing)... and here is the beautiful purple result ! 🥰

Tomorrow I'll be at Place Saint Pierre (Toulouse) art market from 10am to 7pm! I will not be selling these bags just yet because I just printed them and they still need to dry some more.

My next Canadian 🇨🇦 province is Manitoba with its provincial animal the bison and flower the crocus (Anemone patens) in this linocut. The block was inked 'à la poupée' (with different colours, pale violet, umber and brown, in different areas) and printed by hand on lovely Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

It's no mystery how the bison could symbolize this prairie province. Manitoba is one of the few places where 🧵1/n

The bison faces east across the northern part of the province; the rest of the province is pale violet crocuses with unprinted areas for lakes and rivers. Happy birthday to Wilhem Röntgen (1845-1923), the German physicist who discovered x-rays and earned the Nobel Prize for physics in 1901. I’ve depicted him in this thermochromic portrait at work, studying this mysterious, newly discovered, invisible form of light, based on a photograph of him in his lab, using a Crookes tube to produce x-rays. The form of the print mimics the nature of his discovery -
