Hello dear Linux wizards! :linux:

I have installed WordPress through the "Discover Software Center". But it appears there is a new version out. It wants me to download it, and when I do, I get a tar.gz file.

I have tried installing this using a guide. It had me typing loads of commands but somehow it didn't work for me as the site said (I probably messed it up as I had no idea what I was doing, I just tried to follow the commands).

Is there an easy way to install software that comes in a tar.gz file??? I am so used to Windows, where you just click the "update now" button, or where you get an .exe file that does the work for you...

The "old" WP version still works, but if I could, I would like to upgrade it to the new version.

Warning: I am a huge n00b and I am AuDHD, so I am struggling with learning new techie things... But I am eager to try to learn it... 😊

Thanks in advance for your help with a "simple" explanation, if it's possible to "simply" install something, and if so, how I can do that.

:bear_flowers: Thank you!!!

Edit: a great reply told me the code I was looking for was Ctrl-Alt-U and then I could look up the special sign I need! It works! 😁 Thanks so much :pixelheart:

Ello sweet Linux tech wizards! :linux:

As some of you know, I have finally made the big step a while ago and I installed Kubuntu to my old laptop, so I could keep using it a little while longer...

But, I am so used to Windows, and the online help I found, they assume I know that I have some knowledge about what I am doing in Linux... But......

How do I easily access the special signs? Like how do I get to the copyright sign? I know it's Alt+0169 for Windows, but I haven't a clue how to access it in Linux... Or the special letters, like the ones with umlauts and such? I know most of the alt codes but they are useless in Linux.

The guides I found all talked about things that made no sense to me. So, is here anyone that can assume that I am the biggest n00b that they'll ever meet, and explain to me how to get to those special signs without needing to get a degree first?

I know I am asking a lot, as I'd preferably need a "do this, do that" explanation, so it would talk me through every step along the way. But it would help me loads, as I need those signs and letters quite a bit when I am writing for my blog.

Thanks in advance! And sorry that I am just too silly for the online guides... :sad_dog:

Does someone know how to install a Japanese keyboard on XFCE (fedora) where you can type in romaji and it writes in hiragana/katakana (for example you press i and it writes い)?
I know that it works perfectly on Gnome, but I don't know how to get it on XFCE.

Btw is Wayland usable on Nvidia RTX 2060? The last time I was using it, the screen started to freeze after some time, so I got stuck to XFCE.

Fuck I got completely derailed as to what I wanted to ask

Linux experts in the fedi:

I'm struggling with my Steam Deck refusing to make a Steam library on my external hard drive's exFAT partition. It keeps giving me errors about the folder not being executable, but I can do all normal file system tasks in that folder and it is marked as read/write/executable in its properties.

Does anyone have any advice?

Amis #linuxiens, amies #linuxiennes,
AU SECOURS !
I am grave in the merde !

*Sighs*

OK, used Linux Mint installer, formatted partition to ext4 and '/'.

After that was done I tapped the Install Now button.

Error message on screen: 'No EFI System Partition was found. This system will likely not be able to boot successfully, and the installation process may fail.

Please go back and add an EFI System Partition, or continue at your own risk'.

Now what?

(updates and fstab/blkid outputs in thread)

Just upgraded from Kubuntu 24.04 to 24.10. I have two physical hard drives, each LUKS encrypted. Since upgrading, my second hard drive isn't automatically mounting at boot.

I have one LUKS partition that is supposed to unlock both partitions. The drive mounted at / is fine, the second drive isn't.

Where should I look to figure out what's gone wrong and fix it, please?

I have just let Ubuntu do an update, which appeared to be a normal sort of thing, and now my start-up screens are branded Ubuntu Budgie.
WTF does that mean? I only had normal Ubuntu, have they done something with it?
System details still say Ubuntu 24.04.

Note: I am an ordinary, standard issue tech innocent, please do not assume I know what any three or four letter acronyms are. I know what you lot are like.

Would anyone be able to help me with a Linux problem? For some reason when I am playing games, a random white box will just flash in the top left for a second. Randomly my screen will just flash white when I play games as well. It's getting really annoying! I tried Googling it but can't find anything since it's so vague.

I am using EndeavorOS (so Arch) and a RTX 2080Ti.

Edit: It’s fixed now, thanks everyone!

Outgoing call quality is terrible. "Sounds like you are standing next to a waterfall". Tried following this and this advice and modified /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/PinePhonePro/VoiceCall.conf:

cset "name='IN1 Boost' 0"
cset "name='IN2 Boost' 0"
cset "name='IN3 Boost' 0"
That didn't work so I tried reducing mic volume in sxmo menu to 5%. "I still hear static but it is a lot better. I can hear my own voice echo back to me".
I followed
this advice and set
cset "name='ADC Capture Volume' 0"
Still having background static noise as well as echo. Very odd as I would have thought setting capture volume to 0 would have had zero input but it is still picking up too much.

#Linux trial, part one...

I have the SSD USB. The laptop sees it but as soon as I try to "access" the info about it in the manager, the manager crashes 🤔

I've downloaded Etcher, it and I'm trying to install it, but the installer seems stuck just before the finish... And now I get an error log (that makes absolutely no sense to me 🫣).

So it seems my Win7 laptop isn't really ready to cooperate to let me try out Linux...

Are there still apps that someone can access my laptop remotely (with my consent, mind you, no illegal hacking 😂) so they can try it from their system with their knowledge?? If anyone would be willing and able.... 😔

I'm running CCleaner to check for sh*t that got left on the laptop that may be causing issues...

At this point I'm just ready to load up mint to the laptop without even trying it as windows is giving me so many issues... I'll need to work on the blog first and then....

Ugh....

I am away for a few hours later this morning (it's 5:15 here now), but in my late morning/early afternoon, I should be available to be online and get some serious help.... 😇 If anyone would be willing and able to help this n00b Pixy out...

I would appreciate some advice on a #Linux #distro recommendation:
The Device: A 2012 laptop with a 3rd Gen Core i3, 4 GB of RAM, and a spinning HDD (maybe I'll upgrade in the future)
The person it's for: My mom, not very tech savvy, is using Windows 10, will need a replacement for when 10 goes EOL Oct. 2025. Has used Windows Vista, 8, and 10. Everything she does is doable within basic apps like a web browser, simple office suite, or pleasant desktop apps; Linux alternatives will work perfectly.
What the distro has to be: LTS, simple to maintain, have a workable Windows-like interface, not be Ubuntu. Needs to run smoothly on the provided specs.
Any ideas and help are appreciated. Consider boosting for more perspectives.
