Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>Honestly, I don't expect to get much push back over the political post. It's pretty obvious stuff, and I doubt there's really a lot of right-wingers following me (if I'm wrong, feel free to keep on keeping that to yourself).<br><br>But I bet this next one will raise a bit of ire, because I felt I had to weigh in on the subject of generative AI.<br><br>In particular, I experimented with Stable Diffusion prompt-to-image generation in 2022. I haven't really revisited the technology, though I know it has improved, and I have followed some people who are using it.<br><br>I've heard a lot of different criticisms and analysis of it, from many different angles. I was particularly compelled by the "forklift at the gym" analogy that I used for the featured image here, because that made me think about the significance of artistic endeavors, not just as finished works, but as process.<br><br>"AI, Automation, Ritual, and Process in Art"<br><br></span><a href="https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/08/11/ai-automation-ritual-and-process-in-art/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/08/11/ai-automation-ritual-and-process-in-art/</a><span><br><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>The July timelapse is longer. I was hoping to finish up the episode in July, though that didn't happen.<br><br>I DID finish up the Mission Control shots for the "Launch" sequence though, which was a major hurdle. So I feel pretty good about that.<br><br>I also converted the two Soyuz interior shots that I had pulled over from the following "Soyuz Flight" sequence into "Launch". These are now "LA-6-A" &amp; "LA-6-B". I started working on the lipsync for LA-6-B, but there's more work to do there (I might get back to that this week -- but I'm going to be taking this VERY slowly: this is more about keeping me from climbing the walls than about getting any objectives met).<br><br></span><a href="https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/5csJqkh9zmpEhh3TM57vWK" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/5csJqkh9zmpEhh3TM57vWK</a><span><br><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Timelapse" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Timelapse</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/July2025" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#July2025</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>And there's now a summary article about June to go with that:<br><br></span><a href="https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/06/30/june-2025-summary/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/06/30/june-2025-summary/</a><span><br><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Summary" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Summary</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/June2025" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#June2025</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>I've been on a bit of an unplanned creative hiatus, due to catching CoViD on August 1st. It hit me like a ton of bricks, with a bad fever and congestion. I've been very gradually recovering since then. At present, I don't feel much except fatigue and brain fog, but those symptoms are very real.<br><br>Nevertheless, I did finish up timelapses and summaries for June and July.<br><br>The June timelapse was kind of short, owing to quite a bit of non-production work, including some emergency fixes to my web servers.<br><br></span><a href="https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/pdDp19x6f6By47AGGjyQMd" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/pdDp19x6f6By47AGGjyQMd</a><span><br><br>Includes final compositing for "Suiting Up" and re-linking and re-blocking for the "Launch / Mission Control" shots (major changes to set and extras characters, which had to be updated in the shot files, and I re-thought some of the shots, resulting in some more re-timing).<br><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Timelapse" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Timelapse</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/June2025" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#June2025</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>Okay, these are indeed better. I think I'm done with them. Moving on to the next batch of shots to fix.<br><br></span><a href="https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/nZugPGwXYqxJGkB8S2pDdh" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/nZugPGwXYqxJGkB8S2pDdh</a><span><br><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Blender3d" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Blender3d</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Animation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Animation</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/WIP" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WIP</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>I have a revised version of the LA-2 mission control shots rendering. I added the space station video texture into two other shots and I fixed the camera movement in LA-2-D.<br><br>I think.<br><br>It's hard to tell about the video texture in stills. It's a subtle effect that should show up when animated.<br><br>Server is still making whirring noises. I expect it'll be ready tomorrow. Going to sleep... G'night! </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Blender3d" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Blender3d</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Animation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Animation</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>So, I got my renders back from the server on the Mission Control Shots.<br><br>Frankly, they need a bit more love.<br><br>I need to add the video texture on the center screen for shots A &amp; C. It IS used in shot D (the transition shot I showed stills from last night). But it hardly matters, the static image would've looked as well in that one, because we barely glimpse it.<br><br>Also, the camera movement in D is a bit disappointing towards the end: the camera seems to hover/drift a bit before moving in on the Capcom. I think that should move faster -- which would have the added benefit of showing the lip-sync on her line better (she actually has two lines in this shot: first she asks Sergei about the "ride" in Russian, then she asks about the crew, in English -- presumably because she knows they are listening and are English speakers).<br><br></span><a href="https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/raHduNr9GPqpmfvRY8g43J" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/raHduNr9GPqpmfvRY8g43J</a><span><br><br>There is no sound in this test video.<br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/WIP" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WIP</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Blender3D" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Blender3D</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Kdenlive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Kdenlive</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>Me - Producer: "Keep it simple! Time's ticking!"<br><br>Me - Director: "No! We MUST have this cool transition shot!"<br><br>It is really quite difficult to do both of these jobs. They are natural enemies.<br><br>Check renders:<br><br>1 - Exterior "chase camera"<br>2 - Camera shifts to telescope view with video effects<br>3 - Camera reveals extra display of cabin interior<br>4 - Camera starts turning and tracking to show mission control<br>5 - Camera finds the Capcom<br>6 - Camera settles on the Capcom as she is speaking to the crew<br><br>Yes. This could have just been a cut. But where's the fun in that?<br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/WIP" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WIP</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Soyuz" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Soyuz</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Rocket" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Rocket</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Blender3D" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Blender3D</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Kdenlive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Kdenlive</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>Here is the other big video texture for Mission Control. This is from the other flight project the MCR is monitoring, and a bit of a sneak peek into Episode 2.<br><br>This is meant to be the view from the LTS Moon Shuttle preparing to dock at the space station, which happens to coincide with the "Soyuz-SF 19" flight that Hiromi and Georgiana are going up on.<br><br></span><a href="https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/m9Xk5JtBabD7hLQaZeUvov" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/m9Xk5JtBabD7hLQaZeUvov</a><span><br><br>This one is just a still render with a little bit of animation in Kdenlive (using a title clip).<br><br>I've used some different video noise clips on this, and desaturated it slightly. I also added some keyframed box-blur effects, as if the camera focus is glitching occasionally. </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/WIP" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WIP</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Soyuz" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Soyuz</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Rocket" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Rocket</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Blender3D" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Blender3D</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Kdenlive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Kdenlive</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>I picked a pretty generic "video static" effect to go with this. I just wanted to give it some texture, and communicate that it's a video screen (at least at the end of the animation -- it starts out as a direct, fantasy camera PoV. That's kind of the point of the shot as a transition. Didn't really want it to be distracting.<br><br>Also added the interior shot of the Soyuz -- this is a shot from the starboard cabin camera that is most often used in real footage.<br><br>The compositing is done in Kdenlive for this one.<br><br><br></span><a href="https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/4hRrkkfddc4FAGEP4RrA74" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/4hRrkkfddc4FAGEP4RrA74</a><span><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/WIP" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WIP</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Soyuz" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Soyuz</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Rocket" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Rocket</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Blender3D" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Blender3D</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Kdenlive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Kdenlive</a></p>

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>Worked on the </span><a href="https://lunatics.tv" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span>Lunatics release page</span></a><span> CSS a little.<br><br>I had noticed that the page works very poorly on e-ink devices like my InkPad 3 Color reader's browser, because of the animated background effect, which I'm still pretty attached to.<br><br>It moves pretty slowly, but it still created updates with constant flickering as my e-reader tried to keep up.<br><br>Of course, the page is really designed to distribute or stream video, so it's normally intended for full-motion video browsers. The video is never going to work right on an e-reader.<br><br>But there's also credits and other text information on the site.<br><br>So, I looked up methods to fix this with CSS media queries, and I think it's fixed now.<br><br>It now only animates if the browser reports media type "screen" and feature "update: fast".<br><br>And this correctly suppresses animation now on my InkPad 3 Color e-reader. If you happen to have a similar device or other oddball browser, I'd be interested if the page is working for you.<br><br>Still working on honoring other parameters like "prefers-reduced-motion", "prefers-color-scheme", and "prefers-contrast". I would like to get those working as well.<br><br>Ultimately, I may add a Javascript button to change the behavior manually, but the page currently is HTML and CSS only to keep it lighter weight.<br><br>I did also test it in a text-only browser, w3m, where it looks pretty correct. Haven't tried other ones.<br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/WebDesign" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WebDesign</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/CSS" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#CSS</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/MediaQueries" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#MediaQueries</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Testing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Testing</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>For the discerning connoisseur, there is a wide selection of video noise available under an assortment of free-licenses on the Internet Archive.<br><br>I got a nice sampling of PD, CC-0, and CC-By licensed static and glitches, evocative of various, largely defunct video storage mechanisms.<br><br>For reasons...<br><br> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Video" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Video</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Kdenlive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Kdenlive</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/InternetArchive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#InternetArchive</a></p>
Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)<p><span>Timing is so critical in animation.<br><br>And visual storytelling in general, I guess.<br><br>I've decided I want to let the length of the episode grow slightly, but how best to use the extra time..? Without tripping up the pacing..?<br><br></span>🤔<span><br><br>I did feel that the mission control room was being underused a bit. So I'm giving it 20 or 30 more seconds in this edit, with a couple of moving camera shots to take in a bit more. Of course, that will also require retiming the audio again. </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/LunaticsProject" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LunaticsProject</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Animation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Animation</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Directing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Directing</a><span> </span><a href="https://m.filmfreedom.net/tags/Timing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Timing</a></p>
